"The first step will be an open beta beginning today for Fortnite that will allow for cross platform gameplay, progression and commerce across PlayStation 4, Android, iOS, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, Microsoft Windows, and Mac operating systems. We see the beta as an opportunity to conduct thorough testing that ensures cross-platform play is best on PlayStation, while being mindful about the user experience from both a technical and social perspective."

Looks like they've finally done something about it!

Great news and I hope it goes smoothly and comes to many more games. As it says progression and commerce will be crossplatform also I guess that means ps4 accounts will now (soon?) be usable on Xbox and Switch.

Oh, but now millions of PS-gamers of this game will stop playing Fortnite, as this will diminish the experience as many people in this forum were fast to explain to us on many occasions.

In all seriousness though: good for PS-gamers with friends.

Cool.

Don't have a single friend with an X-box.

... Wait, I don't even play Fortnite.

Hmm, pie.

I don't play that game, but this is good news for those that play it, I guess?

Love them or hate them, it seems Sony listens to complaints. Crossplay, downloading from PS Now, external HDD support. The list goes on. Good for them!

Now, as for some of you PS FANS... Look, I get it. You love your console and you don't want to hear anyone say anything bad about it. You don't want anyone thinking they're having a better time than you or whatever. Sometimes, they actually do something that needs to be addressed. When that happens, it's totally okay to complain! That's how things get done. I LOVE Nintendo but I won't hesitate for one second up complain about something I disagree with. When the company "rights what's wrong", YOU benefit.

On that note, hopefully they fix the issue where people's accounts are stuck on PlayStation, too. I'm not a Fortnight player but I know how convenient it is to hop from console to console and platform to platform.

The internet:

Sony haters before: Hahah, Sony is back to their arrogant self
Sony haters after: Hahah, Sony caved to the pressure

It was a damn if they do, damn if they don't situation. The haters will hate regardless. As for the move, a definite step in the right direction. I'm sure that many of the GaaS developers started to get on Sony (to the point of non development for certain titles) to make this happen.

That is fixed as well.  Epic is syncing all platforms, at least from reports on twitter.

People forget about things companies did because of competition as long as it is convenient in the conversation. It was Xbox's cross play policy that they have now changed as to the reason FF14 isn't on Xbox One but no one ever mentions that in conversations because it's just not as big as Fortnite.

Hmm, pie.

But crossplay flips this premise on its head, so a closed environment (i.e. not allowing crossplay) becomes a disadvantage for console sales as the PS4 in this specific example is the worst platform to play Fortnite on.

In what way was playing Fortnite on PS4 any different to any other platform? Genuinely curious as I don't play it. Were the controls worse? Downgraded graphics?

Hmm, pie.

This is great news, good to see the gaming industry taking a good step in the right direction.. took abit of back pedaling but seems like there listening... for now. Ill be waiting for the catch.
