Forums - Nintendo Discussion - ... Locking physical controllers behind a digital paywall

Um, yeah... the NES games themselves are already a big lure to get people to pay for a subscription, because there's no VC on Switch nor other way to buy them on Switch. How do you feel about that?

Only slightly perturbed. Just like the controller itself, I don't have any vested interest in NES games or vc, but I give it a minor pass because of the added functionality of online, which was generally never offered for vc. It may continue over to future of the family of Nintendo systems, which means its more connected to Nintendo Online/Nintendo Account as a platform, rather than Nintendo Switch directly. The way it develops, time will tell. I can't see a slippery slope that is that extreme so I held back criticism based on that line of thinking.

I suppose I would think about it more negatively if you still had to pay for those NES games individually after paying Nintendo Online, but I didn't see anything that points to that.

Don't worry. The price has already scared off people.lol

Charging $60 for them is more anti-consumer than anything else.

This guy is the correct one here. An NES controller costs as much as a GC controller. They are price gouging with these prices. Why in the world would the GC controller with much more buttons cost as a controller with only 2 buttons? It the wireless feature boasting the pricing that much? I doubt it.

Switch is 9th generation. Everyone else is playing on last gen systems! UPDATE: This is no longer true

Guys yes the online suck but this is a reach. You cant use them for anything else anyway and if you really want them chances are you are a retro game fan and will subscribe To their online anyway.

Why would you want joycons NES if you cant play the NES games like what.

If anything this is pro consumer. Now people won't accidentally buy controllers that they can't use because they don't have a subscription?

A wireless controller contains a battery and electronics for a wireless connection, and yes, those are rather expensive components in a controller. Conversely, buttons are very cheap components.

Back in the day the GameCube's Wavebird controller was more expensive than the standard GC controller with a cord. Wireless has its price.

If you are bothered by prices of controllers, it's been common practice for generations to have high profit margins on them. No matter which console you've owned, you overpaid for a first party controller. Could the Switch NES controllers be $20 a piece? Of course, but pretty much all controllers could be $10 cheaper than they are sold for.

I get what you are saying. I am not sure how much production costs are for the controllers. It just feels worse since these controllers aren't an all purpose controller like the GC controller. (Though I do feel like the GC doesn't work well with a lot of games.) I don't know. Having an NES and Gamecube controller at the same price seems wrong. Then again I do not know what the production costs are for these contollers.

People really will whine about just about anything.

Do I think this is a dumb move? yeah, I kinda do.

But is it Nintendo's prerogative and do they have their reasons? Yes it is and yes they do.

These controllers are made for NES games on Switch, which are only available through the online service. Why would anyone who doesn't have a subscription be interested in this?

This.

These are specifically made for the Switch Online NES games. The controllers serve no purpose if you don't have a Switch Online account. Why anyone would be mad about this (OP) is beyond me.

uhhh....like others, I don't really see the issue here.

Though something that is an issue, that I don't see many people talking about, is locking Mew to that obscenely overpriced 35 dollar pokeball thing. Now that's something that Nintendo needs to called out on.

Bet with Intrinsic:

The Switch will outsell 3DS (based on VGchartz numbers), according to me, while Intrinsic thinks the opposite will hold true. One month avatar control for the loser's avatar.

The only thing the Gamecube controller has is more buttons, which wouldn't add much to the price, more plastic,  and motors for rumble, which are more expensive but not by much.

The NES controllers have wireless communication and a rechargeable battery, which would cost way more than motors and buttons.
