If the VGchartz forum search had an option for more than 90 days it'd be fairly easy to see what people predicted for PS4's Japan total sales. Unfortunately it seems that this forum does not want its history to be preserved or at least scavenged through. First online forum I've encountered where it specifically limits how far back you can search. How strange.

I think the search is limited for performance reasons. But whatever, the search here is garbage anyways. Save posts or threads you want to memorize into your sig or something. Searching can be tried with google, but it is equally frustrating.

Switch HW sales very healthy and steady, Switch SW sales absolutely dominate.

Looks like Switch will manage to remain up year over year, while PS4 will be down in Japan.

Switch sold 3.312.619 in 2017, so I'd estimate it'll end up anywhere around upwards of 3.5 million. PS4 sold 1.791.736 in 2017, so it'll probably do around 1.7 million.

Any word on if Octopath Traveler still has supply problems? I wouldn't be surprised if it rises in the charts again.

For a JRPG that isn't Pokemon, it's definitely showing some decent legs. So likely people are still trying to get a hold of the game physically.

It’s a market that’s contracted severely - that’s undeniable. That’s why your Europe comparison doesn’t work. Sony can cater to that market but it would be at the detriment of the other, bigger markets.

Why would it to the detriment? Your explanation does not make much sense.

And why does my comparison not work. Nintendo has not much sales in eastern europe, because they don't have much in representation there. Does that mean Nintendo shouldn't try to build representation, if the sales don't pick up on their own? And at the time Sony expanded into the european market it was very small for console. You argument means they shouldn't have invested in that market (and they invested heavily) in the first place. No, your argument is wrong. Japan has 130 million people, good wealth and many active gamers. If you underperform in that market it is, because you haven't tried enough. OK, given, it is not easy, looking at the MS situation. But then a business is easy?

It does make sense. Japan wants handhelds. Why would Sony forsake their record profits and release a handheld? Japan is also a country where people spend a lot of their free time outside or commuting. Even the Wii didn’t sell very well there compared to other markets. They have just moved to gaming on the go.

That isn't the full explanation though. Sony shunned the japanese market at first with a later release and a western oriented lineup. This are the reasons the PS4 started so slow, that it even seemed possible the WiiU would stay ahead. These failures of Sony in the beginning of the life of the PS4 still hamper momentum.
