Then its too early to say anything. If OT can reach 2million after 1 year then we'll see. 

Especially how with Smash and Pokemon releasing. There will be a large amount of new users coming before 2019.

Japan and west releases were months apart. Japan had done over 600k+ maybe 700k+ before it released in the west

I actually own a physical copy of the game but am still playing through the demo. It is a great game based off just messing around with some of the characters and their first chapters.

Octopath is tearing up the sales charts and my biggest regret is that I didn't see it coming.  I could tell Zelda BotW was going to be the biggest Zelda ever just from the E3 2016 footage, but Octopath was just not on my radar.  Now I have to wait to get a copy.  Ah well.

The cool thing is how much the Switch is turning into a device for old school gamers.  BotW really is a game for old schoolers like myself, but we've also got Sonic Mania, Street Fighter, Bomberman, Puyo Puyo Tetris, Crash Bandicoot, and now Octopath.  Hopefully these third parties will get a clue and make more Switch games just for us old schoolers.

Who is completely not surprised by this news? That would be ya boy right here. I have been saying since Switch was announced that upgraded 3DS exclusives (exclusive being the key word here) would be massive for Switch. I feel great being vindicated this quickly.
