Man, Nintendo just can't stop disappointing. Ever since late last year, it's felt as if the attitude towards the Switch and just Nintendo in general has reeked of an over-hyping of their ability to deliver. And this direct ... kind of proved that. Here we have a company who was able to completely rebound in the mind of gamers .... because of a port, a sequel that - if it's name began with "Call" and ended in "Duty" - would have been lambasted, a Wii-era fighter that while fun was irrelevant very quickly, a game that - despite being nearly completed as far back as january and having nearly 9 months of extra development time - had you doing the same repetitive tasks in every level 10 times over, and a JRPG that should have been delayed by 3-4 months because of how poor of a state it shipped in. Hell, the most impressive thing about the Switch's 2017 lineup, was what other companies were able to do with Nintendo's IP, not Nintendo themselves. Nintendo might have won 2017 with a huge lineup of games, two of which were received by the general audience as GOTG contenders. But it's so obvious, looking back at it, that the year was completely overhyped and that the excuse that "We can't expect much from 2018 when we've gotten so much in 2017" just doesn't hold up when so many of those games were nearly completed as far back as january.

Remember when people said that there would be no droughts because of the merging of handheld and console developers on one platform? Remember when the moment there was a drought people used the excuse that ports count "because nobody played it on the Wii U!" Remember when they continued to use that excuse even after it became blatantly obvious that the only port that would expand to a much wider audience was Mario Kart, the game franchise that always sells millions no matter what?

Like, what are we doing? Making excuses? Nintendo isn't this "new" "totally different" Nintendo everyone keeps saying they are. They're practically the same as always. Stupid online infrastructure, stupid delays, stupid planning. This has been evident for longer than just now, but this direct was the nail in the coffin.

Ok, so not judging Nintendo on people's ridiculous hyperbolic claims ... Seriously, what are Nintendo's studios doing? The 2nd half of the year has a Smash game with a lack of original content, a Pokemon game that uses mobile Go mechanics to remake 1, and possibly a Yoshi game ... which despite looking like a cardboard cut out (heh) of the last one, has been elusive and might possibly get delayed. The first half of the year was so dull and yet we kept hearing the same ol' "Don't worry, it will be different in the 2nd half of the year!" "2018 JuSt STARted BRUHHHH!!! BE PATient!!!". Well look what happened now. Sure, on paper it sounds like a decent affair. But the fact that all the games look so ... mediocre .... lifeless ... dull, makes things even worse. Yes, Smash Ultimate will probably be de besssstt smush game evarrr!!! Doesn't make up for a lack of originality or any of the other parts of the year. And a December release date? For Smash? Really?

Why does Fire Emblem look almost like a Wii game? Yes, graphics have never been important to Nintendo, and it does look better than a Wii game in some places, but I seriously expected a bit more polish. I will say that as sad as I am that it is getting delayed, I am also happy that quality will most likely be improved! It's actually quite funny, because I really wanted a mode where you could walk around your base in a closer third person character perspective. It looks like there is one! I'm just surprised that this didn't hype me much at all when I was looking forward to this the most for E3 (I didn't expect Metroid Prime or Bayonetta to be shown ... would've been nice, though)

Also was really hoping for an exclusive Mech game (not even joking, that just seemed so right for the Switch for me). I'm honestly in fucking shock that I actually got that .. lmao. Daemon x Machina looks fucking great, and I love the edgy CUT - TO - TITLE that they did xD.

Everything else? Honestly pretty crap. It's not that Smash bros looks bad. It's just not that interesting. Why did it have to go on so long? Why couldn't they show new announcements for it? I love the fact that it has every character in Smash history, but it was such a waste of time. Smash was literally 25 minutes long. Why did there constantly have to be cuts to people talking that just wasted time? Why couldn't Yoshi be showed? Why wasn't there more emphasis on Dragon Ball Fighter Z's port? I mean, I don't even care that much about that game ... but jesus, that is big for a lot of people. Why the indies? Did they seriously have nothing else they could show? I mean, they even found a way to downplay Pokemon. Fucking. Pokemon. So many games that we know Nintendo or third parties are making that just didn't show up.

Just a complete disappointment. But you know what? It won't matter. None of this shit affects sales. And we all know there will probably be one or two good directs in the later part of the year. And .... we're still getting ... Metroid Prime, and Fire Emblem, and Bayonetta ....... ugh. I'll just take it laying down. It's just so disappointing, and bad. I've barely used my Switch, at all, this year, and now I don't feel like I have a reason to - and that's what makes me mad and sad. Talk about ports or indies or kirbys all you want. This is just a bad year, I guess.

don't @ me

@angrylittlealchemist I disagree.

My bet with The_Liquid_Laser: I think the Switch won't surpass the PS2 as the best selling system of all time. If it does, I'll play a game of a list that The_Liquid_Laser will provide, I will have to play it for 50 hours or complete it, whatever comes first.

Yeah, I'm totally the door guy, xP

Now we know Nintendo's E3 2019 will be the best thing ever and will have Pikmin 4.

I will just quote my post from the other thread:

I'm not into Smash and none of the other games interested me (aside from maybe Fire Emblem), so the Direct was really boring to me, if I had to rate it I'd give it a 4/10.

That was... empty! Empty of everything that could build a solid future for the Switch.
- There's no effort put in first party games, Smash Ultimate is SmashU ver. 2.0, FE 3 Houses looks incredibly poor in terms of graphics even compared to small-budget PS4 RPGs
- No Bayonetta, no Metroid Prime 4
- Paywall for Mew is just shameful
- 3rd parties aren't interested at all. I've been saying that 3rd party sales haven't been good on Switch and no one believed me. Here's the result today : just 3 new games including 2 ports. End of year is barren as hell.

Seriously, how can anyone say that Switch can have sustainable success now?

I think you're getting a little ahead of yourself there. And 3rd parties aren't interested? Some 3rd party games sold best on Switch when released alongside console counterparts. I think those game makers are very interested.

Sorry but apart from indies, who!? Why aren't they backing Nintendo today?

If I had to guess, porting takes time but DBZ is coming as is Fortnite. The latter is out today, I believe. This just off the top of my head.

Lmao at some of these 1s and 2s. Spent too much on Smash, but I liked that they actually showed.......... NEW GAMES.

I look forward to the new FE game the most! Better than Sony's absolutely, 6/10

MS > Nintendo > Sony

I give it 10/10, because it was clearly the best one of the show. They just fired off game after game there, and I think all of it is coming out within the next 12 months. Fire Emblem looks cool. I haven't played the 3DS ones, because I find I enjoy Fire Emblem a lot more on a big screen. Mario Party looks really cool. I like how they are changing up the formula using the Switch's hardware.

If the presentation had drawbacks it's really more from a business perspective. Smash is their only really big game this year (although this is what I expected). Let's Go Pokemon has the potential to move a lot of hardware too, but I am thinking that it will not have the huge initial sales of a mainline Pokemon game, but I do think it will have very long legs. Fortnite? Not sure if it will move hardware or not, but I do think Switch is the ideal way to play Fortnite. It's kind of like a semi-LAN party where you play with your friends in the room and also other people online. I also thought that they would talk about their online service. Maybe it isn't ready yet? Business wise they aren't going to make their 20m mark this year or come close, but that is what I expected.

As a Switch owner I am very happy. Lots of great games for me to play.

But you already sold your soul to the devil for it this year, what're you going to sell next year?
