If Sony wants to continue to grow their OS, Software, Service, and Store, they will definitly need to expand the form factors these are available on. It is very possible that they could release a Mobile PS4 on the 7nm fabrication process, if they put a lot of effort into making the PS4 tech more power freindly with this revision.

If 7nm is ready for mass market by the end of the year, Sony could drop a PS4 Super Slim (Digital Only Set Top Box) and PS4 Mobile on the same chipset. This would allow them to sell the SS for $199.99 or even $149.99 giving them a great entry device for PS4 Games, and PS Vue. The PS4M could hit at $299.99, and offer full PS4 support for all games, software, and services, including PSVR.

I don't know whether they will go this direction, but both of these products are very possible within the next 6 - 12 months. I have said it for a long time, but Sony seriously needs to dump Xperia, and roll Sony Mobile Communications into Sony Interactive Entertainment. They are only selling 10 Million Xperia's over a dozen different sku's, and loosing money hand over fist. Moving to a shared hardware, shared software ecosystem, running on their own OS would be a massive boost, and give a very positive outlook for the future of the comapny. They would make 100's of millions more selling a single PS4 Mobile model backed by their own OS, Sofwatre, and services, even if they sell half the amount of units.

Hopefully the talk of future 5G products, and new 7nm gaming chips from TSMC is in fact pointing to a return of Mobile gaming for PlayStation.

What are your sources that a portable PS4 is possible to produce for $299 USD in the next 6-12 months? Seriously. I'm not interested in speculation, or what you feel the industry should be able to produce, I want to see clear evidence that the technology exists or will exist in the next few months, that its power and heat dissipation requirements allow it to be made and enclosed in a small form factor, and the pricing for such a technology is low enough that it can be sold for $299.

I've written previously I believe a new portable playstation system and PS5 could be incoming and would compliment each other especially if the portable system doubles up as the VR headset for the PS5.

The portable won't be PS4 power though, it would likely be in the same ballpark for CPU performance but GPU performance could be sub 800 gflops quite easily. Lower quality graphic assets and lower rendering resolution means a better portable with smaller games to fit on flash memory.

It's clear Nintendo have found a huge sector for a portable/home console hybrid and see no reason why a new portable console from Sony can't be the same and also slot into a VR visor too. It's not like Sony can just ignore what Nintendo have done they have to compete with it.

I've struggled to motivate myself to get a Switch. I only really want Mario Odyssey currently and I'm so invested already in playstation software. My fear is Sony will try to outperform the Switch by a large degree and then end up with poor battery runtime. My spec for a ps4 portable would be; 4GB, 64GB flash memory, 1080p display and about a 3x CPU performance increase over Switch and 150% increase in GPU performance for portable mode or pretty much Switch docked GPU performance but while portable. This should be able to run all ps4 games from a game logic perspective but with graphics downgraded for the more ambitious games. It will comfortably outperform the Switch.

I think any slimmer reiteration this year will be a PS4 Pro slim, not the OG. This facilitates the price drop i would anticipate also.

Some industry people were saying some time ago that an aspect the VG Industry was missing is the constant influx of improved hardware and iterations that bring down the price of hardware, like the phones industry. From what i understand, power upgrades as a means of improving games is stagnating. Hardware should be looking for new ways to reach consumers. Motion controls, VR, TV applications, streaming networks, and portability are some of the viable ways to expand outside of power that draw in new crowds.

How many PS4 developers would adapt all their PS4 titles to that?

So how big is the form factor? How long the battery will last with such power? How is it cost? What game can drive it’s sales like Pokemon/Animal Crossing and all games for children market?

I've heard this for well over a year, nothing has happened.

Timing is everything.

A year ago they would not release it because the Pro was fresh on the market.

There was a lot of the same skeptisism over the Pro which many believed was unlikely for it could "splimter the base", yet here we are.

But no one was skeptical that Sony can double the GPU performance of the PS4 after three years.

To put the PS4 performance in a handheld form factor with an acceptable battery life and for an affordable price is a bit more complicated.

Technology-wise, how would Sony shrink down the innards of a PS4 to be both portable, energy-efficient and affordable? Something has to give.

You know it deserves the GOTY.

You know there's still some people around here that think you can just adjust a handful of sliders, recompile, and bingo! Near-instant PS4 mobile port!
