Forums - Movies Discussion - Black Panther Shatters Box Office Projections

So does that mean the movie was pretty good? I'm interested in checking it out myself, and Marvel's been doing overall well with their movies lately.

If this is what BP can do, infinity war is gonna smash all records.

I'm not sure there are enough screenings to do much better. You can only sell out so much.

The big question is how these movies hold in second and third weeks. Black Panther has almost no competition while Infinity War has some (assuming Deadpool and Star Wars don't flop).

It's one of the better Marvel movies.

Like all of them, it has its flaws but you won't walk out disappointed if you've liked recent Marvel films.

Between Wonder Woman and Black Panther perhaps the view of minority and woman leads will be shattered.

Of course, as long as the public keeps supporting these movies Studios will continue making them.

This^^^

Let me tell you something, Disney, is laughing all the way to the bank.  They could give two shits about black and white.  They only see green and red lol.

These records have angered a lot of colonizers on the Internet.

I'm still surprised that people seem to focus on the US box office numbers only. I get it that it is the largest market, but usually the international box office surpass it easily. I can't understand this separation. If a movie makes 200M in the US + 150M international, is it better than a film doing 100M (US) + 700M (international)? Of course not, money is money, it doesn't matter from which country it is.

The only way to measure the success of a film is comparing the total worldwide box office.

Studios get more money from domestic box office; that said Black Panther will probably have a 50/50 split domestic and overseas and will pass 1Billion worldwide it still have China to come

Yes, I'm aware that in the US usually the studio keeps 50% of the revenue, while international markets normally hover around 40% (with China being an outlier, around 25%). Even with that in mind, it's necessary to include all the box office in such performance analyses, because films can have limited appeal outside of the US or the opposite. Titanic, second best BO of all time, had like 70% of his money from international audiences.

Anyway, I think your estimate is mostly on track. Black Panther is only lagging a bit internationally because it has not released in key markets yet. Its performance has being incredible.

The funny thing is that Black Panther was basically a C-level Marvel character. But Marvel has show that they can get characters that no one knows (Dr. Strange, Ant-man, Guardians of the Galaxy) and still get a huge box office. It's rare for the MCU to have a real bad film. Even their worst efforts like Iron Man 3 and Thor 2 are watchable. Since the quality is good, anything with Marvel on its name is guaranteed success at this point.
