It says official Playstation 4 peak battle but wasn't 2017 down from 2016?

In shipments the fiscal year is forecast as 19m, last FY was 20m.

But in terms of consumer sales for the calendar year 2017 was up a lot.

2016 - 17.5m    (35.9m as of January 3rd 2016, 53.4m as of January 1st 2017)
2017 - 20.2m    (53.4m as of January 1st 2017, 73.6m as of December 31st 2017)

Tagging. Expecting 2018 to be the peak year of PS4.

There was no week for PS4 in 2017 where it dropped below 200k. That's freaking insane!

Now that we have our first VGC numbers for 2018, this comparison can now begin! It's the battle to determine the Peak Year of the PlayStation 4. Sony sold approximately 20.2 million PS4 units in 2017, making it the 3rd home console in history to do it after the PS2 and the Wii. Ironically, both of those systems had back to back years of 20+ million units sold and all fingers point to the PS4 doing the same in 2018. Those fingers are also pointing to 2018 being the peak year of the PS4. So, from the User who brought you the Triple Threat Match between 2015, 2016, and 2017, comes the 1 on 1 clash of Titans! 2017 vs. 2018!

Thank you for makeing this thread :)

AH okay. So March 2016-2017 had more shipments(barely) but 2017 had better sell-through compared to 2016? That makes more sense. I thought  for sure 2017 beat 2016, but then I would gaze over comments that would say that 2016 beat 2017 and I was like "huh?" So thanks for clearing that up.

I think it will be hard to beat 2017 but I think Sony can do it this year. Would be an incredibly achievement for sure.

2013: 4.2m
2014: 14.3m
2015: 17.4m
2016: 17.5m
2017: 20.2m
= 73,6m sold though to consumers.

It hasnt ever been down a year.

5M copies have been shipped.  We know it is the best opening in UK, and it did really well in Japan too.

Yes. But in shipments. And thats because of how these weird fiscal years work.

2016 fiscal year is from apr 2016 to march 2017. And 2017 is from arpril 2017 to march 2018.

in 2017 they shipped 1M less consoles or so than they did in 2016 fiscal year.

But they sold through over 2M more consoles to consumers in 2017 than they did in 2016.

This is probably because they overshipped in 2016 so going into the 2017 fiscal year there was a surplus of hardware in the channels.

I doubt 2018 will be up against 2017, the PS4 is starting to get old and market saturation is slowly starting to set in, too. There's also not much Sony can do anymore with the price; a 50$ price cut is probably incoming this year but this will be probably the lowest the console will sell outside of promos

I do think however that while the PS4 as a whole won't be up, the PS4 Pro sales will be higher than 2017, slowly drawing closer to the base model's sales
