Right now is really not the best time to build a PC. With the RAM prices increasing thanks to Samsung/Apple and others out there, and the GPU prices rising due to miners, it just makes for not a good time to look into building a high end rig.

I'd suggest looking back into building one halfway through the year. It's not going to stay like this forever, because it always reaches a point where one of the bubbles burst.

 

I have to say though, you took your time on waiting to build one. Why now of all times?.

Video cards are at a all time high.  I think you are getting "less" than you were before. Plus even if you join a group that just means you are having to pay a group fee (for electricity, rent etc) and only getting a fraction of the worth.

Is there a new "coin" people are mining that isn't "bit"coin and thus are making a profit off that?

A lot of new crypto currencies exists, we're talking about hundreds. It's very easy to start your own blockchain. Currencies below Bitcoin are showing the same rise as Bitcoin but are currently much cheaper to mine. It's basically the big second wave after bitcoin, just spread across dozens of different currencies. Everyone is hoping to get in early and that their specific mined currency will grow in value similarly to bitcoin. It's a gamble, very much comparable to the 19th century Gold Rush. You're buying a whole mine in hopes it will have enough gold in it to amortize the costs.

People will do a lot for "free money" even if the margins are very small.



If you demand respect or gratitude for your volunteer work, you're doing volunteering wrong.

Indeed, GPU prices are ridiculous.

TechSpot did an article about it a few days ago comparing MSRP values with actual retail prices: https://www.techspot.com/news/72854-nvidia-asking-graphics-card-retailers-prioritize-gamers-over.html

And neither AMD nor Nvidia can do anything about it, because retailers will (obviously) try get as much profit as they can, without caring who is buying the cards.

The worst part, tho, is that I doubt this mining craze will end anytime soon unless authorities start regulating all this crytpo currencies madness, and they don't seem particularly worried about it.

Congrats on your new card.

I wanted to upgrade from my current 960 to 1060 a year ago, but didn't manage to sell the 960 before prices went up. But I can play everything on High with good frames anyway.

Between Meltdown/Spectre, high NAND prices leading to pricier SSD's, and the mining craze, I'd wait a bit indeed: knowing you, you have a Switch, anyway.

With mining having no end in sight as more cryptocurrencies grow, I'm wondering if we'll ever see graphic cards not have such inflated prices. I have no hope for RAM decreasing as we see home appliances become smart as well, so I'll probably just continue to wait and see if we'll ever get retail-priced graphics cards. 

I'm in the same boat...Would love to upgrade my PC but not for that much money. This whole development is a threat to PC gaming and VR development as a whole. It needs to stop or at least be controlled somehow.

Yeah the Switch is a very enjoyable console. Just wish I got into the PC world before card prices exploded

Yeah I'm currently using a 760 which wasn't a bad card when it was coupled up with my old CPU, but my Ryzen 7 1700 will have no issues making full use out of the 1060s power.
