Forums - Nintendo - Japan: Splatoon 2 outsells Splatoon's total, Switch hardware sales outpacing PS2

Interesting, I remember the PS2 had sold like, 1.4 million in march and then it was selling 500k per month for a few months. Are you sure this data is correct? I tried looking on VGChartz but they don't have any PS2 data from back then.

Splatoon 1 sold 1.5 million in Japan lifetime, Splatoon 2 is now at 1.66 million.

PS2 sold 3 million in Japan from its March 4th launch to the end of the year, Switch is now at 3.26 million in the same period.

Splatoon 2 definetly outsold splat1 at this point just want to clarify splatoon should be around 1.8mil digital+shipped ltd. (Digital was around 200k)

Splat2 should be around 170k-200k digital. So the game will be 2mil at years end digital+ship

I wonder how many units Splatoon 2 will sell in the long run.

Over 8 million, easily.

I guess you mean with 8 million world wide? It is already now according to vgchartz the most successful shooter in Japan ever.

Data doesn't need to be correct, fake news and reporting stuff without source also has made it to VGchartz

Sony reported at the end of december 3.94 shipments for Japan including Asia.

That's including the rest of Asia though. The Switch number here are just Japan.

Also, those PS2 numbers are until 31st of December, while the Switch numbers are from Media Create which is up to the week ending 24th of December.

What's more the PS2 numbers are units shipped, while the Switch numbers are units sold.

All of that can account for the difference.

You are comparing shipped numbers in Asia to sold numbers in Japan.

It's an excellent franchise. Glad it's getting the sales it deserves, now that it's free from the potato-tier sales of the Wii U.

Do the Japanese not like potatoes?

Could very well see Splatoon becoming a franchise that consistently sells between 3-4 million in Japan, maybe over 4 million.
And to think this is the same team that makes Animal Crossing, which is now consistently selling 4.5 to 5 million.

Damn right, Nintendo should invest more money into this team! It's worth it if they can find 1 or 2 more big hit franchises of that caliber to go along with Splatoon and Animal Crossing, as well as Pokemon, Mario, and Smash Bros.
