Forums - Gaming Discussion - Soooo did the Xbox One X succeed?

Birimbau said:

I don't think so. there is not much selling incentives for the XONEX besides more resolution. At least PS4Pro counts with 1st party exclusives which are the only reason i own a PS4 since I play all multiplats on PC.

Resolution, performance, better textures thanks to more RAM. Thats worth something for people who play multiplats on consoles.

Anywho, I think X1X is a success. I mean its an option for those who want higher visual fidelity in the console arena, its given Xbox the technical edge, its changed the narative on specs. I dont think its a huge game changer but its a boost for the Xbox.

I think X1X has potential to do well in the coming years when its like $250 (holiday 2020 maybe) and assuming it can handle 9th gen content well. It will inevitably have the price edge on PS5 with the same multiplat games. That could buy MS time to release a device technically superior the following year while still relying on the cheaper X1X.

From what is being seen by DF and such though, that new machine isn't a 4k/60fps device either, there must be a point when people hold off a purchase beyond the promise of what it can do by the people aiming to sell it.

Buy a X1 for 1080p/60 get 720/900p/30fps

Buy an X1X for 4k... get a solid 1080p machine.

The thing is.... the machine is great for what it does, but it doesn't have the power to do what it was advertised as having, with "no compromises" it was just never built as such.

Was it advertised as a 4K/60 fps machine with no compromises? I can't remember that promise.

It was advertised as

  • the most powerful console so far (what it is... most multi-platform games look and/or perform better than on PS4 Pro)
  • the best suited console for 4K TVs (which is also correct, every resolution above 1920x1080 looks better in 4K, not only native 4K)
  • with native 4K support for some games (neither all games nor the majority of XBO games were promised for native 4K)

There was a trailer claiming 4k, 60 fps, and no compromises which was ridiculous. We already knew that wouldnt be the ase prior to launch.

In the end its stll the best console specs on the market and hits 4K with more ease than its competitor.

Sorry but we all still hear Spencer saying "the ONLY console capable of doing full, uncompromised 4K" at reveal. His words, not ours.

Seems like the X1X is off to a good start, though as of right now it's not really showing it's the most powerful console on the market.

Between the X1X and PS4 Pro, overall you'd have a hard time telling which is the more powerful unit based upon the X1X's current games lineup.

Hopefully that gap opens up in 2018.

The Best Buy guy on reset era said sales took a nose dive, it’s probably why they bundled games and started deals for it so soon.

I guess it depends on people’s definition. I’m sure it sold very well, but with the way it was marketed, I wouldn’t be surprised if the majority of its purchasers were people who already own 1 or more XB1 consoles, meaning that even with high sales numbers it didn’t contribute much to expanding the player base. Just my theory, but I could be wrong

Yeah.  This factor limits the significance of sales numbers.  If I buy an X, it will be my third Xbone.  The disk drive on my original broke, so I bought an S.  Now I want to upgrade to an X.  But, I won't be buying games 3 times for my 3 consoles.

The same thing goes for all platforms though.  3DS owner upgrades to XL, then upgrades to New 3DS.  PS4 owners probably purchased most of the Pros.

On the other than though, I purchased a Pro as my first PS4.  There certainly are many people doing this same thing with X.  So, what it all comes down to is hardware sales do not equal player base.

To confuse things even more - I am generally an XB first gamer.  So, if I owned both a regular PS4 and XB1, I would be more valuable to MS than Sony, as I would probably buy most games for XB.  But, since i have a Pro, I buy most multi-plats for PS4.  That makes me more valuable to Sony.  When I upgrade to X, it will swing back the other way.

Where do you get a new Xbox One X for less than $499 or an Xbox One X + bundled item (game, second controller...) for $499? Where are these deals?

Congrats, great way to start a flamewar.

Now, to rain into your parade, here are a few numbers (from an apparently trustworthy resetera source). The X sold 430k in November in NA (making up roughly two thirds of ww sales), the Pro sold 260k in comparison. PS4 sales in NA make up about a third of ww sales, so we can guess ww sales of the Pro at around 780k (probably even higher, as MC reported high sales of Pros in Japanrecently). Solidly BEATING ww sales of the X, even in its launch month. That simple calculation would shoot down your pet theory. Now how's that for starting a flamewar?

Very true indeed. People easily seem to forget that U.S. =! The world and I'd say X1+X1X not being able to beat PS4 at launch month even there, doesn't bode considerably well for the future of the console. I'd also wager 430K (including pre-orders!) doesn't seem too impressive in comparison to the 260K the Pro was doing (granted they had pretty amazing deals at Gamestop + Amazon). I also expect Sony to increase their marketing on Pro & PSVR during the upcoming year.

It's interesting that when ps4 pro launched, also ps4 slim + ps4 pro could not beat XBox One + XBox One S during launch week in the US. The One S gave MS a 4 month win streak in the US. These mid gen refreshes are great to keep the hardcore from moving on to PC, yet for overall sales it's not doing much.

Given that the console has been out over a month now and it has been beating the PS4 Pro in pretty much every comparison(not unexpected but still a huge benefit), has the Xbox One X landed with an explosion? Or a thud? We never did get proper sales statistics but what is your opinion? Is it a success for a $499 console?

PS I was talking to my brother about it the other day and it is $650AUS here in Australia, he mentioned how it was funny that the PS2 was about $750AUS when it launched 17 years ago lol. There has been a deflation of console prices it seems.

I dunno, not having Bloodborne or NioH is a pretty big loss on the XBOX's part.

In all seriousness, I'm sure it's doing fine. Keep in mind the Pro and X were never meant to sell gangbusters, only to exist as a higher tier option. In that sense, both are a success.

It's a success to its enthusiast target audience. Sales wise again short term will sell fine. Long term not so much IMO and not saying it will fail long run but I believe who this thing sells to will shrink a bit over the next year. Even if it stays relatively steady. It still has the hurdle of exclusives and esp games that show off the X. So far not much. Racing games are always the easiest to show off new hardware but it's not enough. MS is bundling PUBG with X and that's not great for showing off this hardware esp when the performance is so bad. With FPS averaging around 18 with drops to 4FPS and bad texture load in where at times the low poly mode (which looks like a melted N64 game) can still be present when you land in the game world for a good chunk of time. Crackdown was supposed to be the game that showed the X off but people complained f PS3 era graphics and the game got delayed into 2018 leaving X with less to show off.
What hurts more, in the long run, is the X1 that is selling gangbusters is the X1 in a Nintendo tablet. Xbox One X is doing ok now to a dedicated crowd but overall it's not changing the mind of the average consumer who is trying to decide between a PS4 or Switch, esp this holiday.
