Forums - Gaming - One word to describe the PS4X1WU era and its Game of the Generation (GotG)

Destiny? Um what? Anyways BOTW all the way baby

I'm not saying Destiny was the best game of the 8th gen, all I'm saying is it was the most noteworthy with its release timing and big names backing it: Activision and Bungie, the latter of which had never developed a prominent sci-fi shooter for the PS platform.

GotG is not always a form of praise. For me, Destiny is worthy of the GotG label for how disappointing it was despite its great promise.

ET is potential candidate of being a Game of its Respective Generation because of its impact on the industry at its time. Notorious lack of quality that hurts an industry can make you a GotG.

Yes, just like Destiny released on both 360 and Xbox One.

However, both games were developed primarily for 8th gen consoles. So, I think they count as 8th gen GotG contenders.

Edit: umm, scratch that. Destiny obviously doesn't count as GotG contender for obvious reasons. In any case, I think if you're going by the definition of "8th gen was disappointing, so GotG has to be disappointing", there's better choices than Destiny - namely, No Man's Sky. It's still talked about and villainized to this day, and it was the absolute peak of hype hyperbole - plus, it was truly hated by everyone at launch, unlike Destiny which still had a lukewarm critical reception. In any case, I don't think Destiny does well in the "noteworthy" category, because to me at least it seems like people just forgot about it.

No Man's Sky was a candidate for GotG but I'm going to give it to Destiny because of big Activision $$$ and Bungie fame boost as well as an early release in the gen.

Destiny is one of the beat games ever made. At launch it was a bit sparse but now it has a lot of content.

I don't mean to beat a dead horse, but I am not understanding how you arrived to your definition of Game of the Generation. Typically, that doesn't mean most infamous game or most hyped game. It usually means best or most impactful.

I can see Destiny having a lot of hype due to the people backing it or how it had so much potential. But I am struggling to reconcile those things with reason for a game to get Game of the Generation recognition.

No offense, but it just sounds like you're making that definition up. I guess, technically, YOUR GotG can be any game, because that's a personal pick. I just never heard of the reasons or definition you gave for a game being GotG. Further, could you name another generation where the GotG was a huge disappointment like Destiny? Because I can't think of one.(Edited, because I missed that last sentence. However, ET was never a GotG. Especially after releasing 2 years after Pac Man. I think you are mistaking notorious for generation defining.)

I don't think this generation has been any more or less disappointing than any others. But, I will note that the loot box craves currently sweeping gaming is very concerning to me. It will be interesting to see how that plays out going forward.

Ask for game of the generation, I don't disagree with your choice of Destiny. It was heavily hyped, and very heavily played. It also disappointed many people. I played far more of it than any other game in my entire lifetime.

I would also put Zelda and The Witcher 3 forward as examples of monumentally excellent games, with very little disappointment or bullshit around them.

Breath of the wild was developed for the Wii U.   Nintendo just dragged its feet so they could release it with the new generation when it became clear that the Wii U was a flop

One game of he generation? Horizonborne: Breath of the Wild.

Destiny is the single reason why I don't bother buying AAA games at launch any more (except on a Nintendo system) as I know 9 out of 10 times I will get an incomplete game that requires, PATCHES, DLC, SEASON PASSES, LOOT BOXES AND WHATEVER OTHER TERM YOU WANT TO THROW IN AKA MILK MONEY.

If Nintendo pulls this shit I will do the same with their games. Some DLC is acceptable but not when a full game is cut up into 100 pieces.

I've had my enjoyment this generation but many of the games I've played since 2013 were either last gen titles remastered or games that were from 7th/8th gen hardware. Good games but I almost never had an "I'm playing something from the future!" feeling that I got with Gears of War, Soul Calibur, or Mario 64.

Mass Effect Andromeda and Watch Dogs confirmed GotG !!

Never played either but I don't think either were as bad as ET.

> How good or bad a game is is of little relevance when I consider labeling a game 'Game of the Generation'. I absolutely LOVE Resident Evil 4, played it a million times, but as much as I love it, Halo Combat Evolved beats it out hands down considering Halo established a new platform, XBox, almost singlehandedly. I've never played CoD4 Modern Warfare but it's undeniable all the modern military shooters that released after that title in the 7th gen and its dominance saleswise for a time and setting online gaming trends.

> lol, I admit I'm throwing things at the wall and seeing what sticks. 8th gen is a tough one, I must say, not as easy as previous gens (see http://gamrconnect.vgchartz.com/thread.php?id=214574 ). I can't really think of any one game having the impact CoD4 had years ago or helping to usher in 3d gaming like Super Mario 64 did. I feel 8th gen was filled with lots of disappointment, moreso than previous gens especially considering how poorly it started: only one out of three platforms had major appeal. One of the biggest disappointments of the gen was Destiny.

Destiny sucks. Far from the GOTG.

For me, GotG is not about a game being good or bad. It's more about 'noteworthiness'. See OP for vgchartz.com/thread.php?id=214574

But... What exactly made Destiny so noteworthy to you?
