Forums - Gaming - So is "get a second job for a PS3" gaming's biggest misquote?

Chinese whispers is how misquotes happen.

I still feel the "work more hours" is worse. At least Mattrick's quote is offering a cheaper alternative.

What was he thinking.

"What would Ken Kutaragi say?"

Getting a 2nd job is pretty low. Its okay if that was a common practice for the average human. The issue is how many people (especially young gamers) have 2 jobs let alone 1? Did they think about the children? Why doesnt anyone think about the children..

This is an interesting topic, as it seems whenever Japanese developers, publishers or press people wear their arrogance on their sleeve and say what they mean, suddenly things are "mistranslated"

"It's better than nothing" - Inafune's misquote. Turns out, he meant the exact opposite.
“I own all the problems” is the "correct" quote. What are the odds that the translator gets everything else the guy says down pat, but this line he got completely chuffed up and totally backwards.

"We didn't want too many sword users" a misquote by the directors of Fire Emblem Warriors when questioned on the cast of the game featuring the entire franchise. This quote went unchecked for quite a while until 8 sword users were revealed for FE:W, at which point this quote was "corrected" to be "We didn't want too many Lords." How convenient for their hypocrisy.

"You should be banned. Youre clearly flaming the president and even his brother who you know nothing about. Dont be such a partisan hack"

That's not a misquote though. That was actually said. This is about quotes and such out of gaming that weren't actually said, but people think they did because it was repeated enough.

Think "Beam me up, Scotty". Captain Kirk never says these actual words in Star Trek, at least not in that order, but people attribute that to the show anyway. Ken Kutaragi never said "get a second job" to get a PS3, but a lot of people think he did.

I think Don's quote does fit, but the way the post was phrased didn't explain it properly though. What most people felt Don said was "if you don't have decent internet, or any at all, then FU". What Don was really trying to say, as a businessman trying to push his products and make money was, 'if you don't have decent internet, we have a solution for you'. That may not have been what gamers wanted to hear, but that's what the game plan was going forward unfortunately.

Same as the DRM quote 'we can't just turn it off, it's baked right into the hardware itself' (or something close to that). What most people felt they were being told was "we don't want you sharing/pirating games you crooks, so FU". What XB really meant was that if they did a 180 on this, it would change everything about the ecosystem they had spent years designing, and they didn't want to go down that route for many obvious reasons, like potentially losing money and falling way behind.

Cerny's 'Pro can technically do 8.4TF' quote also comes to mind. Some people took this to mean "Pro is more powerful than Scorpio", when really, all Cerny was saying is that there is a lot the go to specs don't show you, and Pro won't be as far behind Scorpio as those numbers suggest.

Finding dumb game marketing quotes is much much easier than finding someone's words being twisted like Ken's were, or to the same extent anyway. This is actually quite a distinct incident, if you aren't willing to twist other events a little to have something to compare to.

PS1   - ! - We must build a console that can alert our enemies.

PS2  - @- We must build a console that offers online living room gaming.

PS3   - #- We must build a console that’s powerful, social, costs and does everything.

PS4   - $- We must build a console that’s affordable, charges for services, and pumps out exclusives.

PRO  -%-We must build a console that's VR ready, checkerboard upscales, and sells but a fraction of the money printer.

PS5   - ^ -We must build a console that’s a generational cross product, with RT lighting, and price hiking.

PRO  -&- We must build a console that Super Res upscales and continues the cost increases.

Honestly, I still think Don Mattrick's "We have a console for you: the 360", was far worse and more damaging. That basically said if you can't adapt your gaming to our obviously horrible business model, then go play the severely outdated hardware that we might continue to support for another year or so. It was arrogant, and borderline insulting to some as to how they just blatantly dismissed a huge portion of their playerbase.

The get a second job thing was stupid, but I interpret it as "our new console is so awesome, you'll get a second job because you want it so bad!". They shouldn't have pretended like high pricing was such an amazing thing, but at least there was a reason for it: the OG PS3 models were pretty beefy.

It's not a misquote if the meaning is the same.

It's a misquote if people are quoting him saying "get a second job" when he didn't. Not that telling people that they should feel like they want to work more hours to get one sounded too much rosier. I guess he was trying to stress the value of the machine, but in reality, it comes off as a bit overwhelming. Especially when the previous machine was more affordable.

It's wayyy too fishy that pretty much every negative thing is later cleared up as a "misquote"

Between that and Don Mattrick's one..

"Fortunately we have a product for people who aren't able to get some form of connectivity, it's called xbox 360". Prelaunch for the Xbox One.
