Uh, I'm pretty sure one of them is dead and the rest are working on other stuff. + If you actually played the game, thia could be considered as a reimagining of Metroid II. It's vastly different from the original and AM2R. |
It's still just taking an older game and remaking it. The greatest Metroid game ever (Super Metroid) was made internally. When Nintendo is properly motivated, no one can touch them when it comes to 2D Metroid. I'd love to see them try a new one.
I think if they are pleased with sales of game we will definitely seeing 2D Metroid alongside 3D Metroid. Metroid Prime 5 will of course be 3D.

Similar to my SMT 4 Apocalypse critique. I... wouldn't go that far at all. Without going into detail, if Super Metroid/Zero Mission are standard Metroid games, SR feels like the amusement park of a standard metroid game. Amusement parks can be fun. But i mean this is metroid. |
You focus way too much on whether something is or isn't a "standard" or "proper" game in the series.
Acevil said: I think right now the focus will be Metroid Prime 4 |
We don't know who's working on Prime 4 yet so while they focus on that Sakamoto and his team for hire (Nintendo doesn't like to develop Metroid games in house anymore sadly) can focus on Metroid 5 just like they did with Fusion and Prime and Federation Force and Samus Returns.
Darwinianevolution said: I would love some 2D HD sprites. 3D graphics on 2D Metroid is just jarring to me, and I'm not sure why. Maye it's because I love Fusion's artsyle so much (haven't played yet, but it looks beautiful). Where's the GBA-DS sprites nowadays? Megaman Zero, Astroboy GBA, The Minish Cup, TWEWY, Megaman ZX, the DS Castlevanias... |
Fusion is one of the best Metroid games i've played and i still like Zero Mission and Super but honestly i feel like it's time to move on from 2D.
2.5D or 3D is the way to go for Metroid.
mZuzek said: Good to see someone else hyping this game, it deserves more attention. |
I haven't 100% the game yet but i think i know what you're talking about, i think Game Informer did a video about that image and about the next Metroid game.
Mar1217 said: 2) I'm expecting a remake of Super Metroid, if there ever was to be a new 2D Metroid game to be honest. |
Please no that would be a huge waste, not to mention the Metroid series has already 2 official remakes and 3 if you consider Super Metroid to be a reimagine of Metroid. The Metroid series needs to move on it needs Metroid 5.
mZuzek said: Nah, Samus Returns looks beautiful in 3D, the depth it adds to the world is awesome. Sure without the 3D effect on something like the Switch I guess it wouldn't have the same impact, but they could make up for that with much (MUCH) better HD visuals. |
I agree, i'm glad they chose to go with the 3DS since it fits perfectly, though i would have liked Samus' model to have looked better but everything else looks nice and the gameplay is what really matters.
Puppyroach said: Imo Metroid should stay as a 2D game, it works best in 2D and all secrets and tricks you can do are at their beat when you only have to focus on moving in four directions. |
2D Metroid is great but i feel that 2.5D can open up much more possibilities for the series.
d21lewis said: I wish it was on the Switch. My only gripe. |
I hope we'll get Metroid 5 for Switch.

Luke888 said: Finished today, definitely up there amongst the best Metroid games alongside Zero Mission and Super. If they didn't have to make this a remake of Metroid II I'd argue it'd probably be the best 2D Metroid game of all time since the repetitivity of the bosses was forced by the original and Samus Returns does its best to add up to that to give more variety. I'm really looking forward to Metroid 5 since they even hinted at it in the photo gallery... |
Agreed, Metroid 2 was already a flawed game in that regard it's also the most linear but with this remake they managed to fix most of it's problems and made it more challenging it's really fun i never got bored while playing.
mZuzek said:
~Says the guy who hasn't played the 2.5D game. (Yes, assumption levels off the charts here I know. But it seems to be the case and it's likely as seemingly most people here haven't played it... and no, you can't judge atmosphere just by watching a game, that's ridiculous.) |
Again i agree, i understand that some people prefer 2D sprites over 3D models but the atmosphere? C'mon...
MTZehvor said: I'd say the answer should largely depend on what exactly they want to do with the game, because both the Prime games and the 2D titles are better at different things. If it's going to focus on the teaser image that you get after 100%ing the game, however, I think I'd lean towards a first person Prime title. Prime's emphasis on atmosphere from a first person perspective and the ability to scan lore would both be very useful for a game that would probably be extremely atmospheric and focus heavily on background knowledge. |
I don't think it's going to be first person and honestly i think it shouldn't.
Prime games are the 3D line Metroid games by Miyamoto and Tanabe.
2D/2.5D line of Metroid games by Sakamoto.
AngryLittleAlchemist said: All these people saying they're more excited for Metroid 5 or that they think Metroid should only be in 2D make me sad. I have only played Prime 1, but I can honestly not imagine Metroid games being better than the Prime series. I even played a bit of Super Metroid and found it very meh in the first few hours |
Well if it weren't for Super Metroid we wouldn't have gotten Metroid Prime in the first place, on top of that i don't think Metroid as a series would even be remembered without Super Metroid.
mZuzek said: My first Metroid games were Super and Prime and at first I thought they were both meh, because that's what Metroid games are like - they take a while to get good and they have a heavy atmosphere that is hard to get into. |
Once again i agree, i really couldn't get into Super Metroid the first time playing i didn't understand what people saw in this game but then after many tries and finally digging it's gameplay it really grew on me and made me appreciate other 'Metroidvania' games like Symphony, Steamworld Dig, Metroid Prime all of them great but none as good as Super.
Volterra_90 said: I think both 3D and 2D Metroids has its cons and pros. Tbh, I think that both can and should coexist, and that's the same way I feel about franchises like Zelda. I hope that Nintendo can bring us Metroid 5, and not just bring us Metroid Prime 4. I must say that I'm definitely more hyped about a new 2D Metroid than a new Prime, because it's been a long time since we didn't have a pretty good 2D Metroid. About Samus Returns, I haven't had the opportunity to play the game (sadly, I sold my 3DS a while ago, and I still regret that choice, but it's late now ). But I heard that there are teleportation rooms in the game? I mean, that doesn't make the game feel more linear? It's what kept me worried about it. I mean, Metroid games is about backtracking and find new paths with your new adquired power-ups. Also, how does the 3D feels in this game? I'm about to buy it with a friend who still has the 3DS, and we're definitely thinking about it. |
Agreed, Metroid should have it's 3D and 2D line of games.
You really need to play Samus Returns i sure love it, and no the transportation don't make it more linear it only makes it more convinient and less boring for you to fast travel, there are lots of teleport stations and it cuts down on backtracking BUT you're never forced to use them which is what makes this game so great it lets you choose to use teleport and optional abilities and the purists act like these things are being shoved down their throats just by seeing them.
Right now I am happy I got this one, and I don't want to spoil the fun but the game will not sell as much as Nintendo hopes so they will focus on prime 4, after that no guarantee for another 2D metroid

Thanks for once again proving your awful taste by being a Mac user. Do you have an AM2R specific problem? I know my Wii U Pro controller (emulated as a Xbox 360 controller) had a strange glitch exclusively with AM2R that was for some reason fixed by installing the crappy 360 controller "driver" or something. |
My controllers literally wont connect. At least not wirelessly.

While i understand where youre coming from, this is not my same issue with something like Prime. Prime is different. SR is shallow. Prime is a much better game. SR is a more proper metroid. I'd sooner play Prime.
That being said, no i dont. My problem is never that something isnt standard, but why and how it impacts its series. I want an open starfox with ground missions, which isnt "proper" SF gameplay, but my reasons are in line with my critiques here, so im not at all against bucking a tradition if it makes sense.
Mar1217 said:
Ok ... so you wanna see a 2D Metroid that is classic or different instead of being an hybrid of both ? |
No, i want to see a linear evolution of what came before, ideally. That or something of a parelell.
Fusion is an imperfect example of that. While i don't like Fusion overall, the power grip and climbing ladders/monkey bars is a linear evolution of Samus' movement, and makes for platforming possibilities not possible in Super. On the other hand, wall jumping was first downgraded in Fusion, which makes for less platforming possibilities.
These kinds of evolutions and devolutions aren't exclusive to platforming, those were just examples i used, but my (biggest) issue with SR is that it is almost exclusively devolutions. Really bad ones that effect literally every facet of the game.

Actually i hope Nintendo develops Metroid 5 inhouse, but since they don't like wasting their time on Metroid, Star Fox, F-Zero anymore and MercurySteam did their job i guess they deserve a second try. Besides Nintendo gaining another Western third party developer ally can only mean good stuff
Ubisoft + Next Level Games + MercurySteam + Bethesda
Nintendo has been doing their homework!

- I agree with most of your other points but placing the next Metroid game to sometime earlier in the timeline will only bring more confusion, plot holes and fan outcry like what happened with Other M.
Other M takes place right after Super Metroid which takes place like just a year (or immediately?) after Metroid 2 and Fusion (correct me if i'm wrong) takes place like months after Other M. If you include the Prime games in the official canon it's already a mess of a timeline with just 10 games and it makes even less sense than the Mario timeline.
I know that Metroid is not remembered for it's complex story or characters but this is not the 80's and 90's anymore if Zelda can have a convoluted timeline that core Zelda fans take seriously then so should Metroid let's not turn this into another Kingdom Hearts continue the damn story after Fusion already. The Metroids will surely find their way into the next game just like Ridley does each time and even if they don't it's really not about the Metroids, Chozo or Federation it's about gameplay first story second. (as long as they take the story seriously)
MTZehvor said:
The issue is, with a storyline like this, there's going to be the need for a lot of passive storytelling to explain how we got here |
I don't think it needs much explaining, it should be made clear that Samus has become an enemy of the Federation and the hunter has become the hunted later throughout the game we get "reminded" of why Samus decided to go against them and their it follows with history of the Chozo, the Metroid etc. That is more than enough to keep the game interesting as long as the gameplay is tight.
While scanning was fun in Prime not everybody is interested in scanning and reading everything they find. Besides by implementing this way of storytelling the story will automatically be dumbed down because it should not hinder the experience. That's why i feel that it should be explained with cutscenes, text or voice acting but it should be skippable and not too heavy for those who don't care and just want to enjoy the game.
spemanig said: I disagree completely. |
You don't like Samus Returns?
That's alright we all have different tastes.
flashfire926 said: I personally think the most likely outcome is that we get a Super Metroid remake on switch 1 or 2 years after prime 4. |
Well, MercurySteam approached Nintendo to remake Metroid Fusion, Sakamoto was smart enough to decline and made the right choice to remake Metroid 2 instead. So i don't see Super Remake happening.
AlfredoTurkey said: Hopefully something truly original and not a remake... and please, get the original Metroid team to work on it. |
- agreed
- That won't be happening anytime soon but atleast Nintendo EAD could give it a go.
Slarvax said: I didn't love SR, but it's a great comback. It was sadly limited by being a remake and the 3DS hardware. The ending is very interesting though. I wonder if Sakamoto or MercurySteam came up with that. |
Probably Sakamoto since anything crucial to the story happens because of him even if MS came up with the idea they probably had to ask Sakamoto for approval first.
JWeinCom said: Since there has only been one original 2D game since Super Metroid, I'm guessing they'll remake Super Metroid. |
Yeah part of this is because Metroid as a series just doesn't sell, had it been a system seller like Mario we would have gotten a bunch of 2D Metroid games over the years but i don't see a Super Metroid Remake happening, i hope it doesn't.

Exactly, same goes for Star Fox and F-Zero it's just that these games don't sell shit so Nintendo doesn't want to waste their time and resources on these games and I can say this with 100% confidence the whole reason Samus Returns has been so well received is because Nintendo aided MercurySteam in creating the game had this not been the case well... Mirror of SHiT!
