Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Bethesda: Doom on Switch Runs at 30FPS, Multiplayer Download is 9 GB, more.

Most people won't give a shit about the framerate as long as its playable and fun, I have to remind again that games played on hanhelds are way more forgiving with framerates, as for the multiplayer not being on the box.... doesn't everyone says the multiplayer is shit anyways? For a handheld port Doom looks mindblowing and all previews are pretty positive.

Nonesense! Most people who play games dont give two fucks about fps as long as its playable.

Yeah of course Nintendo fans don't give a fuck. They're used to playing games at 640p at 30fps

Destiny 2, released just this month, is 30FPS on both XBox One and PS4, so I'm pretty sure they're used to playing games at 30FPS as well.

Also 30 FPS on XBox One and PS4:  Alien Isolation, Assassin's Creed IV, Assassin's Creed Sydicate, Assassin's Creed Unity, Batman Arkham Knight, Bloodborne, Dead Rising 3, Destiny, Dragon Age Inquisition, DriveClub, Dying Light, Everybody's Gone to the Rapture, Fallout 4, Far Cry 4, Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD Remastered, Forza Horison 2, Grand Theft Auto V, Infamous Second Son, Kinnect Sports Rivals, Knack, Lords of the Fallen, Mad Max, Middle Earth Shadow of Mordor, Need for Speed, Need for Speed Rivals, Planetside 2, Sleeping Dogs Definitive Edition, SOMA, The Amazing Spider Man 2, The Crew, The Evil Within, The Order 1886, The Witcher 3 Wild Hunt, Theif, Watch Dogs....

No idea why people are saying that all the time. It has a very old school MP similar to Quake or UT (without the vehicles of course). They did a huge MP update not too long ago and it's quite fun. Also the MP has bots, which isn't too common nowadays.

So you're saying if Doom launched on Xbox One at 30fps and at 60fps on PS4 people wouldn't be mad? Obviously there's a reason it's 30fps on Switch and that's fine but pretending like that's not an important distinction to a lot of people is just lol.

The differnce between the XB1s (~1.4 Tflop) and the PS4s (~1.84 Tflop) is like 32%.

The PS4 is perphaps 4 times as powerfull as the switch..... 4 times.... thats 400%, theres too big a gap.

There has to be sacrifices to run 3rd party games when they are as demanding as doom is.

It's more than 4 times (for Doom at least). Doom on switch undocked runs at 540p @30fps  which is 8 times less demanding than 1080p @ 60fps (PS4).

While percent differences are useful metrics to acknowledge for the intended purpose of the above posts, it is important to remember that performance is not necessarily linearly dependent on stated floating points or linearly dependent on any single variable at all really. Bottenecks are not that predictable. It is also important to not compare theoretical floating point performance across different architectures, as the real world yields will be significantly different depending on the technology used.

In the case of Switch and Doom it is likely that there are multiple bottlenecks which make a locked 60fps uneconomical as a goal, and therefore a locked 30fps was preferred. And the game has to run in handheld mode too, so that limits things even further.

As a side note, where was it confirmed that the undocked mode is at 540p? Digital foundry was speculating that it was a variable resolution.

Not really, but I hoped Bethesda would at least try to work around the framerate issue. The moment people see the Switch version has half the FPS they're gonna throw it in the dumpster.

Exactly. The average person who plays game doesn't know or even notice what fps is. Only people on gaming related websites care.

That comment was clearly a joke...im literally posotive on 99% of Switch threads. What stemmed from that comment - the discussion about how notable 60fps was- was not a joke. Plus, none of those are Fast paced shooters except mayyyybe Destiny but thats maybe. False equivalency

Disappointing, but not particularly surprising. There's a big jump between a Switch (even docked) and a PS4/X1, and dropping to 30fps is an efficient way of shortening that gap. We can see from the teasers that they've already been fairly aggressive in cutting the resolution and in-game assets too, so 60fps likley wasn't an option without compromising the visuals to the point people on the internet would just mock it. At 30fps it at least still looks fine.

Are there any screenshot comparisons to the other versions?

If price wasn't a factor we wouldn't be "forced" to download the MP. It would be part of the cart.

Well, I wish that they just went with a 32GB cart then, as that would have made everything on the cart.

32GiB Cartridges will surely come at a later date, right now they are probably just too expensive. Just for comarisions' sake, 16GiB SD cards cost around 8€, 32GiB around 15€ and 64GiB around 25€ (cheapest models each). So a 32GiB Cartridge would probably have costed around 5€ more, or in other terms 5€ less income per game sold physically. That might just have been a bit too hard to stomach
