There is one problem though it seems Switch can run 1080p/60 PS4 games in 720p/30. But how on earth is the Switch going to run 85% of PS4 games which run at 1080p/30fps and sometimes below. Those games can be ported I guess but it will be a pain in the arse. In the end SSB 4 could run on 3ds and Wii U.

The 60 to 30fps could be a CPU bottleneck that could be less dramatic for 30fps games, after all we are getting a decent Skyrim on the Switch.

True but the original Skyrim ran on consoles far weaker than the Switch. In the end every modern game can be ported if you remove enough graphical features and hires textures. But surely the graphical difference between a AA or AAA game that runs 30fps on PS4 and 30fps on Switch will be way bigger than between a game that runs 60fps on PS4 and 30fps on Switch. Especially when it's not an upgraded port dating from the 7th gen.

Please excuse my (probally) poor grammar

Well if that doesn't look like 30fps with drops. Guess I had too much faith in the Doom engine.

If you demand respect or gratitude for your volunteer work, you're doing volunteering wrong.

So, the videos aren't in 60fps, which means that they're at 24fps, while I assume the final game will be 30fps, so there is a slight difference.

id Tech 6 is fantastic, and the port is still in development.
Given time I am sure they can get a Perfect 30 FPS.

Well consider the game wasn't quite locked at 60 fps on consoles. Then consider the already dated CPUs on consoles, and lastly consider Switch is weaker.

They probably could make it 60 fps, but they would require great compromise on a game that struggles to stay at 60 fps on superior specs.

I did consider games like Rage and Wolfenstein did 60 fps on 7th gen. But obviously those games are not at par with Doom visually.

I've made the point elsewhere but we really need to see the retail code to know how it really performs. It's got to last a reasonable time on battery even with heavy use of wifi for multiplayer. While not super demanding on cpu resources its certainly makes heavy use of gpu resources. Demo units may have little regard for battery life.

On the game itself I bought it for my xbox one it was something like £8 and even at 60fps with a decent controller I did get bored of it quite quickly. It's fantastic fun but that repetitive feeling does come into play quite quickly.

I don't think as a title in content terms it compares to Skyrim. Skyrim is a huge adventure, a virtual world with an incredible amount of things to see and do and the ability to play the game as you want to. It can be tailored to the experience you want. I think Skyrim is a far superior game especially with the additions they have added to the Switch version. This doom feels like more of an update on doom 3 which was brilliant on the old original xbox. I'm not knocking the game but I wouldn't have wanted to pay more than £8 for the title. It's worth a bash now and again. It certainly doesn't seem like anything that couldn't have run on ps3 and 360 either with the necessary graphic downgrade's too.

I remember Doom 3 BFG on 360 and PS3 which both ran at 60 fps although only the 360 could do it consistently. 3D output was an option and I'm a big fan of it but it meant a 30fps drop killing the feel of the game. However I personally find Vita games at 30fps ok. It must be the smaller screen or the fact its OLED or something and I suspect the Switch will be pretty good at 30fps on the small screen but on the big screen where it takes up a greater amount of your field of view I think 30 fps will very poor on Switch. So I personally hope hdmi output on Switch is 60fps which considering the extra graphic resources should be possible as long as they stick with 720p.

Played it undocked though ...

Sorry, I wrote it wrong, I meant docked :P

Still, it won't change anything. Docked vs. undocked isn't enough of a gap as to double the framerate, as evidenced by pretty much any Switch game ever.

You are probably right and one of the factors is the way the Switch has to quickly toggle between docked and undocked modes but it is in theory possible to have 2 graphic output stages, one that actually displays 60 fps and another that displays only 30 fps but its a lot of extra effort that I doubt they will do for the small improvement in game feel. It also might make optimising for portable mode a little more difficult if the game engine has to still work as if it has a 60 fps frame rate in joycon reading but only actually generate 30 fps in portable mode for graphics. Nvidia are on top of the game for decent motion interpolation though which they have used to great effect when outputting 3D from their graphics cards at high frame rates like 120fps.

According to Digital Foundrys slightly improvised testing is indeed a cpu bottleneck. The gpu side of things seems to be fine, but the fact that one CPU core is reserved for the system+the fact tha it's a mobile ARM cpu are limiting performance.

The Switch has four more, albeit much weaker cpu cores doesn't it? I wonder why they don't relegate the system to those and free up the fourth A57 core instead.

I bought a relatively cheap copy on the PS4 and still haven't even fired that up, I'll likely pass on Doom. I never bought nor played Wolfenstien or Skyrim so I'll probably pick those up at some point.

That looks basically like a PS4/XB1 tier game running on a freaking portable device. Yeah I'm sure some things are scaled back obviously ... but that's very impressive if you ask me. Best looking Switch game pretty easily I would say.

This is far better than the days of the Wii getting really ugly looking/totally reworked/gimped "versions" of the HD twins titles or the SNES/Genny days of getting noticeably downgraded but still fun arcade ports of things like Street Fighter II, Mortal Kombat, NBA Jam, etc.

If Nintendo ever does a Switch Pro that is maybe 400 GFLOPS undocked and 1 TFLOP docked ... man they are really going to see a flood of third party support.
