It's not about price, rather perceived value. Otherwise, 800$ phones would never sell.

If paying $800 up front was the only way to buy them, they wouldn't, its paying a small amount monthly along with cellular plan that makes them sell.

This is what we call an excuse. Because higher price means its suppose to sell less than something thats cheaper? Its 100% right... Should i take out the chalkboard

Yes, price isn't important at all, it's not like a price drop ever saved a nintendo handheld from poor sales or anything right?

And your focus entirely on the price factor and not the home vs handheld says a lot too.

As someone that has lived in japan now for more than half thier lives, I've watched the trends change, handhelds right now are significantly more desirable in japan, and have been for the past several years, hence the sarcastic "surprise".

As such getting all hyped up because of a relatively small market with a historical preference for handhelds, outselling a home console doesn't make any sense, if it was the same the world over then fair enough, but it isn't.

1 i never said price doesnt matter at all. Im talking about 1 thing and 1 thing only. The price point. Your right with everything else (i should of taking note woth hh and home console) but your post made it seem like it was just the price difference that makes this not shocking.... So apologies if thats not it.

That said compare vita and ps4 and there you go "25k yen handheld vs a 40k yen home console

In an age where iPhones are selling gangbusters at $700 the Switch will look quite cheap to the consumer.  Especially as a shiny new piece of portable hardware.

And $400-500 has been the standard launch price for consoles the last 2 gens.

It's also both a handheld and hybrid so it will have consumers from both markets purchasing.  The fact it's selling like a portable in Japan shouldn't be a surprise to nobody.

You are forgeting that iPhone had those prices even before 3DS launch, and 3DS didnt sell at $250 in any case.

Maybe for Sony/MS, Nintendo has very difrent price point and I was talking about Nintendo home consoles, GC launched at $200, Wii and $250 and Wii U at $300. Not only that, but Switch has price point of games of home consoles.

You think it's both, home console and handheld. Actually it's maybe it is surprised that is selling so much especially with huge stock issues with price point of $300, 3DS needs huge price point to start selling in Japan.

Have you adjusted for inflation because $300 today isn't $300 back when previous Nintendo consoles launched.  Back in 2007 Switch would cost around $250 so I'm glad we've debunked this myth.

Back in 2000 the switch would of cost just over $20 and in 1990 just over $150!

So by today's standards $300 really ain't much especially when you're talking a powerful handheld which the likes of 3DS, DS,  GB etc weren't powerful when they launched.

So, everyone was calli g doomed for the swith before launched. Now, suddenly, everybody knew it would do great.....

Seeing some of the excuses people are using though... so much fun :)

It is just how people act on this site. I for the one will admit it is doing better than expected, and I am fan of the company.

It is doing far better than expected. Not even nintendo planned for this.... that's why they can't meet demand. Is a Wii-like situation all over again

Yeah that's the fun part, to see people changing their arguments and using the worst possible excuses once they are proven wrong, and some are ALWAYS proven wrong, which has a lot of merit because is hard to be always wrong.

This site didn't have that many people calling it doomed. A few loud users, but not too many.

Gaf though... http://neogaf.com/showthread.php?t=1333545&page=1

Bet with bluedawgs: I say Switch will outsell PS4 in 2018, he says PS4 will outsell Switch. He's now permabanned, but the bet will remain in my sig.
