If the comment isn’t being denied as jest than the rest of your statement is clearly BS. Joking doesn’t make anything fact, it doesn’t mean that he won’t protect a black person or even make the same joke to them and change the race " We only kill white people ".  It doesn’t validate a fear, it validates the media portrayal of police violence against black people.

I suppose you are one of those people who believe that the prison system is made up of a majority of black people because police are racist? That they didn’t actually commit whatever crime they are convicted of?

There are definitely instances where the police act out of fear and kill someone for no reason, it happens to all races. When you look at high crime rate areas though, most of them are inner cities with a higher black population.  Take a city like Chicago, how many murders this week? How many of those murders happened in predominantly black neighborhoods? I suppose it’s some white guy going around killing people in black neighborhoods, or maybe the cops just targeting that area for no reason. I’m not saying that all races don’t commit crime or that all black people are criminals. I do however refuse to dismiss the fact that areas with predominantly black population seem to be areas with the highest crime rates, Baltimore and Chicago for instance.

I don't care how many blacks commited how many crimes, it still does not give any cop the right to kill someone because of their skin color alone.  If we're going to hold things against entire races for what they did in the past, then we should lock up every white person right now.

He joked about it. You mentioned we should throw every white in jail... Not too different in my eyes. Both inappropriate comments. The police officer is simply in a place of power which does make it more inappropriate. He won't and shouldn't get fired for this.

He was joking and being sarcastic. Put him on desk duty for awhile, that's about as much punishment that is warranted imho.

Looks like he is getting fired. And why shouldn't he be?

Do the "pro Police" people understand that simply having zero repurcussions to "bad cops" doesn't help "good cops" any? They are the ones that are poisoning the well for everyone. If you can't operate at a higher moral/responsibility level, take off that goddamn uniform and stop fucking ruining it for the people who do their job properly, because right now you have a situation of extreme mistrust between the police and large portions of communities and that isn't good for anyone.

The whole "lets not blame police" for anything attitude needs to go or nothing is ever going to get better. Police need to be held to a higher standard and those officers that cannot live up to those standards -- get the fuck out. You're only doing a disservice to your community by fostering negativity you are ruining the standing general police officers who are better than you by acting irresponsibly.

If you want to be making sarcastic jokes ... go do stand up comedy. Being a police officer is not where you should if that's how you handle the position. In general cops in the US need far, far better training. European and Canadian police seem to handle day to day situations like this far, far better on average.

Looks like he will be fired so you have your wish.

He should be fired. You would get fired at a McDonalds or Wal-Mart for saying something like this on camera, so why should a cop have free reign to be saying stupid things? Beyond that as a public servant he has a greater responsibility to be a positive force in his community.

All this does is inflame a situation and make it harder for legitimate good cops ... when bad cops are allowed to stick around it creates mistrust and tarnishes the uniform. Police departments need to realize that and have a zero tolerance policy. If you can't operate at a higher moral standard, then you are not fit for the job. Plain and simple.

Why would someone at Walmart or McDonald's make that joke? It only makes sense if a cop makes it.

And get off your high horse about higher moral standard. The joke might have been in poor taste but there's no evidence of ill will.

Pretty funny thing to say, but not everyone is going to share your sense of humour. Cops should know this.

It was a dreadfully distasteful joke in a apparently vain attempt to calm the drunk woman. I've said worse things in jest to friends and even acquaintances at times, though not in a racist manner. He should be penalised, don't get me wrong but... At the end of the day, it was a joke. The woman has succeeded in shifting the focus from her drink driving, a much more serious and actually law breaking offense, to a terrible and racist joke that the officer told.

I'm sure there are worse police officers doing worse things and getting away with it. Using excessive force for instance yet only get a suspension. If he does get fired, think of the precedence this sets for cases like this in the future... Police are already under enough stress and scrutiny. This could have a worse effect on the good police.

I agree that the US police system is very flawed. 19 weeks is nowhere near enough training time. Compared to 119 in Australia... Not to mention they can get into the police force without even finishing high school last I knew. Hopefully they have an extensive Psych evaluation...

But why? You wanna go?

There was a study that police in the US is a bit less likely to shoot blacks than whites. Overall lethal force by police is rare considering the amount of homicides in comparison.

https://www.nytimes.com/2016/07/12/upshot/surprising-new-evidence-shows-bias-in-police-use-of-force-but-not-in-shootings.html

Biggest problem is inner-city crime (gangs) which is mostly inner-racial violence. About 90% of blacks are getting murdered by other blacks according to the FBI data:

You need to be better as a cop, especially when you have a situation that is quite frankly bad and they have poor standing with a lot of people. Doing stuff like this is plain stupid.

You need to be better than a 13-year-old when being a police officer ... sorry but you are a public servant, which also means the public pays your fucking salary. Be a professional or get out. You're only making it harder for police officers who actually do their job well by not doing your job well, because incidents like this just make people go "yup, see they are assholes". It's not needed. Cops in the US generally need far better training and those who are crap cops need to go.

Of course everybody's going to try and euphemism this. Its not acceptable. That's not even something you fucking joke about.
