For me it's about new users. The site needs to grow to exist and seeing the main page of a gaming forum have political posts on it can probably be off putting.

Pretty much sounds like people just want to see what they are interested in. If VGC has a political section then those threads has just as much relevance as the gaming potion. The solution would be to give people the option to filter what they want to see on the front page. To suggest that what you believe is best for VGC because you do not want to see something seems elitist. I believe every user has the ability to use the site they way they want and VGC can give them the ability to filter what they want to see to make the site better instead of banning or removing things just to please a certain group.
