Gender dysphoria is serious mental disorder (DSM-5) - the military picks the most reliable candidates so tg are out similar to ADHD or Anorexics.

Accomondation would be difficult, starting with new tg-bathrooms and showers, followed by expensive operations and long recovery times.

Transgender people don't require new bathrooms or showers.

How do you classify it as a serious mental disorder?

Ironically, so is discrimination.

You can call it discrimination but really its about selecting the most able bodied. Not allowing someone with a disability is discrimination as well however you cant exactly fight if you are disabled. Having a man dressed as a women in the womens barracks and a women dressed as a man in the mens barracks is just not something troops should have to deal with. They need to be focused on fighting the enemy and accomplishing whatever goal is in front of them. It is a distraction they dont need and doesnt help anyone.

Well said 100% agree. Most sensible comment yet.

It is classified in DSM-5 that doesn't mean it it a serious mental disorder...

erectile dysfunction is identified in DSM-5.... so if you cannot get boner, you cannot join the military?

Outright banning them from serving seems like transphobia. Excluding them for proper reasons, such as insufficient physical condition (if that's the case), is OK, but outright banning them is just ridiculous.

I understand to some extent limiting combat roles or limiting active duty within, say, one year of surgical treatment, but a blanket ban seems to be painting the issue in overly broad strokes. A wording of this change which focused on a person's ability to do the required work I believe would be more specifically applicable, actually accomplishing what this change sets out to accomplish without being needlessly discriminatory.

As a side note, this change seems to target transgendered individuals, not only transsexual individuals. This means people who identify as their non-biological gender are included in this ban whether or not they have actually transitioned.

At least, in regards to the insufficient physical condition example, that would be a case where the person in question went through the training and testing and didn't pass the necessary physical requirements, and thus were not allowed to join. In that case, it's very understandable.

Here, they're not even letting them try!

DSM is about mental disorders, so erectile dysfunction would only be relevant if it were caused by mental disorders.
