Forums - Microsoft - If XBX fails, what next?

Xbox is still a brand with value in North America. The people where I work only talk about "playing Xbox". It's not like it's irredeemable.

When I remarked on my workplace being Xbox-land, my co-worker said, "Playstation is mostly just sports games." I'm not making that up. When I said something about Playstation having a lot of Japanese games, he just looked at me in confusion. He was probably thinking, "how could I play a game in Japanese, you idiot."

Anyway, that aside, Xbox is another gateway to Microsoft's ecosystem and they're not going to drop it anytime soon.

Yeah, I agree. It's another gateway. Xbox is decentralizing its video game business. It will keep selling its living room boxes, even if they're selling less than the competition, because they still allow the company to make a lot of money off subscription fees and software. We'll see more and more games released on both Windows and Xbox.

It's not about "winning" to Microsoft. That's a fan preoccupation. It's about turning a profit and protecting its much more valuable property: Windows.

Who knows? Maybe this decentralization and games-as-a-service model will actually make Microsoft more money than a traditional console model.

Well it depends on whether or not they are making money. If the x1x doesn't sell much but they still make profit... Xbox One 2 is going to come out.

Thats dangerous, before the tech to make it smart to do so, are avalible.

You want MS to do a 1,000$ console?

You need to wait for 7nm to be ready for chips, and for amd to have its new cpu&gpu ready.

Otherwise you risk your competitor launching a year later, but much cheaper, same or more power in system.

If MS do a PS3 and launch a 600$ system, and then Playstation 5, comes out a year lateron for 400$ and more powerfull... things will go bad.

Wut does any of that have to do with my comment? All I said was if the x1x is profitable, they are gonna make another xbox console... Obviously not right away...

Again, X1/X1X primarily needs to maintain current sales.

What we know for certain is major 3rd party and 1st party games are coming. So that and the X1X should help stimulate sales.

People keep saying X1X is a niche product, but I see it as the X1S replacement after a few price cuts.

But if they mantain current sales, there is no way how they could reach X360 sales, unless im mistaken.

Can you please list which major 1st party games are coming?

The OG X1 (including S) after almost 4 years in the market, has managed to lower the price to 250$. By the time the X1X reaches that pricepoint (2021 if it follows the OG footsteps) the Xbox One ecosystem will have +8 years in the market. I honestly dont think it will last that long.

XBoxX-dock for Switch: upscales every Switch game to 4K and plays Xb1-titles. Obviously not on the go though, only in docked mode.

i'm fulling expecting the xbox one x to fail. I mean it's target audience is very niche, the gamer who has a 4k tv and wants to spend a ton of extra money just to play games in 4k. I figure most people who have a 4k tv and are gamers are people who are all into the latest gadget so they are gonna already have a ps4 or xbox and only the few that are way way super into having the latest tech thing would want to spend another $500 just to play in 4k.

I don't see xbx selling more than 3 million lifetime.

I feel like Microsoft should try something new with their next console, being one of the console twins isn't working because Playstation is a much stronger brand. I don't know what that different thing is, but Sony and Nintendo currently have hugely popular systems and xbox is just languishing. Xbox needs to do something different. Graphics are so good these days that few people care about graphical differences between a "weak" console and a strong console like xbox1x because they all have amazing graphics.

Its possible the X1X could phase out the X1S in a few years. I mean if they can get it down to $299 in a few years then why bother producing X1S?

At some point I expect there will only be X1X and perhaps a successor. So your prediction of 3 million is low because at some point I think X1X will become the cheap option to play modern games.

Because the X1X doesn't cater to the core demographic of people buying consoles.  It's a niche console, and it's main function doesn't match what the average person has in their living room, which means it will never be perceived by the majority of consumers as "the cheap option to play modern games".  Once a successor does get released, whatever the XBox One line does consist of at that time (X, S, or both) will see its sales drop like a stone just like the XBox 360 did a year after XBox One released.

Well, Xbox One doesn't need to reach the X360 hardware base to reach the X360 user base. ;)

How much of the 80 million 360-consoles were RRoD replacements? 10 million? 15 million? 20 million?

At its core the X1X is just a better version of the X1 and it works on any TV with HDMI (720p, 1080p or even 4K). Regardless of the resolution of your television, games will have more polish and better performance.

The X1X will EVENTUALLY be a cheap console that plays modern games by the time Sony or MS puts out something new. And they will cost more than the X1X.

Its also worth noting the X1X could be supported along with a newer X1. If MS is really entertaining the idea of upgrading X1 every 4 years. I imagine at some point MS will just phase out support for OG X1/X1S. But continue with X1X because its great GPU, improved CPU, and RAM.

Either way, at the very least X1X should stimulate some sales.

Well MS did drop a few billion fixing consoles. So it may not be as bad as you think.

But I get your point and its relevant for any platform.

If there were 20mil X360 replaced it means that they ended the generation at a distant Third compared with the Wii and PS3.

Microsoft maybe are taking into consideration X360 sales without the replaced units to set up their expectations of the X1 sales, which is a good thing considering how thing are going right now.

If it fails they will probably rush out the xbox Two
