There doesn't seem to be any 'untying' in his idea. The disc is tied to the console forever.

Then that completely defeats the purpose of physical. We just came full circle on microsofts thought process for the xb1 reveal. I'm not seeing the overwhelming benefit here over just going digital (except maybe for Uk users who have to pay higher for digital but that seems more like an exception)

I thought so too, but his idea is pretty flexible. Just to be clear, trying the disc to a console is fully optional. One copy can act as either physical or digital, which means there's no need for separate physically sold physical and digital copies. I mean, the other option would be to sell digital codes physically in addition to selling traditional discs. I think that's the practical approach, but at the same time, it's really inflexible. You're stuck with the method you chose.
What if you bought a game, expecing it to be good and something you want to keep? Of course you'd buy the digital version. Now what if they game turned out bad? You can't just sell it because it's not possible. Or conversely what if you buy a game, expecting to sell it later, but deciding to keep it instead? That's not much of a problem, but if you prefer digital, you now have a physical copy and trading it for a digital copy is bound to take some extra effort and cost some extra money. If every physically sold copy acts as either a physical copy or a digital copy, there's no problem.
