I think Sega actually made a price drop on the Genesis before last minute to counter Nintendo, so it's not like that hasn't happened before.

This also means that Neogaf with the random google searchs and that "build a robot for 399$" picture where wrong.

People where expecting 449-499$.
But Neogaf googled one of those codes on those scorpip promo pictures, somehow linked it to another old picture of a ad at 399$, and was convinced it was a hidden message that it would be 399$.
That seems like the price most people were expecting, although the whole $399 bandwagon was picking up steam recently, kind of like the unrealistic expectation of a $249 Switch.
If so then it's fucked. Sony can push the PS4Pro to $350 to kill all of Scorpio's buz.

That's going to be a tough sell. For the power you're getting it's not like they're overcharging, but... yeah it'll be a tough sell.
