I can't really tell without some good examples, 3DS games is not good example because has terrible 240p resolution.

Some 3DS games can look surpriseingly good upressed abit:

I think Nintendo consoles (because they normally run lower resolutions) benefit the most from being upressed. Results are less noticeable going from 1080p->4k, than from 240p -> 1080p/4k.

3DS vs Emulator (Citra):

^ this is what pokemon fans want it to look like. They want a console version, not a 3DS version of their pokemon games.

The question doesn't make much sense. The purpose of having a higher resolution IS to have better graphics.

I describe myself as a little dose of toxic masculinity.

Came in here to say the exact same thing. Particle effects, soft shadows and many other visual features are directly impacted by resolutions. I'd rather have a higher resolution that lessens the need for AA effects and leaves more resources for PP effects.

Like it or not, resolution is a huge part of visual fidelity. For me, the jump from 1080p to 1440p was staggering, everything looks so much better, especially PP effects and shadows.

Graphics is too broad of a term, but anyway art style trumps all.

Take two examples.

Wind Waker & Wind Waker HD. Both games have different graphics and resolution, yet both follow the same art style. Both are completely 100% playable today and look great. Their graphics or resolution don't really matter.

8-Bit style games. Any 8-bit or 16-bit or of that art style game today. It does not matter if it is 4k, 1080p, or back on a NES and in like 240 or something. Take Super Mario Maker. You can choose the art style to look like an NES game, yet it is still in 1080p. If someone plugged in an actual NES system for you, you would pop in Super Mario and play that game and still have a blast.

Art styles can be timeless. Graphics often are shit in a year or two.

Makes me think of movies and CG vs practical. Watch some older movies that use either. The CG movies will make you cringe, or are glaringly bad. Makes some movie unwatchable. Even movies that at the time were thought to be amazing due to CG now look like a sci-fi channel movie. Yet pop in a movie that does practical effects like Jurassic park or the Labrynth and the movies hold up and almost get a unique quality to them. Even jumping to 4k discs they at times look even better.

Art style always wins when talking "graphics", and when talking resolution if there is a good art style used the resolution doesn't matter.

Just because you can apply different art styles to graphics, doesn't mean they aren't graphics any more. Wind Waker has graphics just like any other game, they're just done in a unique way, applying interesting use of colors, simple textures, cel-shading, and cartoon-ish models to echo a different feel than most realistic games do, but they're still graphics.

That was why I used Wind Waker. They didn't just upres the HD version. They redid the graphics, but kept the same art style.  So they improved both the graphics and the resolution as this topic is about.

But beyond the gameplay improvements of the HD remake, I would have no qualms about playig the gamecube version over the Wii U version. That is purely because of the art style. Both games graphics are great and still copmletely playable today. Neither games resolution makes the game any more playable than the others.

It is purely the art style that makes that game timeless.

Graphics. There's no contest at all for me. High resolution with subpar graphics looks barren at worst, which is one of the worst things for immersion. Low resolution doesn't generally hurt the experience, of which pre-HD TV and gaming are proof. Besides, I don't mind games looking a bit blurry/pixelated if as a tradeoff, I can get better graphics otherwise. In fact, I'd probably be perfectly happy if we still had 720p, if that meant better graphics/framerate.

Both cause you know why

But if I really have to choose... Better Resolution until 1080p and then better graphics

Agree.

Make the game run nativly at your display resolution, whatever it is, and then improve the graphics.

Please excuse my bad English.

Currently gaming on a PC with an i5-4670k@stock (for now), 16Gb RAM 1600 MHz and a GTX 1070

Steam / Live / NNID : jonxiquet    Add me if you want, but I'm a single player gamer.

Resolution takes priority for me, I really hope nintendo can increase the resolution of mario odyssey to 900p when docked even if it means sacrificing the graphical fidelity.

I think the question should be graphics Vs framerate.

Most of us still use 1080p therefore would want more high quality graphics.

There's only 2 races: White and 'Political Agenda'
2 Genders: Male and 'Political Agenda'
2 Hairstyles for female characters: Long and 'Political Agenda'
2 Sexualities: Straight and 'Political Agenda'

I hope so too, even better if they manage to increase the resolution while still keeping the graphics as they are right now. Apparently the game was basically finished when we saw it for the first time, so they'd have an entire year just to polish the game some more if they wanted to. At the very least I hope for some antialiasing, since the city level had jaggies everywhere =P
