How can it be catching up, if its like 60m units ahead?

Interesting concept, but there are no handheld generations or console generations.  There are currently just "Video Game Generations".  The 3DS and Vita are part of the 8th Generation of Video Games.  The DS and PSP were part of the 7th Generation of Video Games.  Etc...

3DS and vita were released during the 7th generation (ps4, wiiu and xbox one were not out). so that would then make the switch (releasing along side wiiu, ps4 and xbox one) an 8th gen console.

ive always found combining console and handheld generations to be messy and pointless, since theyre seperate devices entirely

Well there is nothing wrong with redefining the concept. Its not like the console generation is an official term in the first place.

Handhelds have kicked-off the last 2 Generations.  This actually goes to prove that the Nintendo Switch whether considered handheld or hybrid can in fact be considered the start of the 9th Generation of Video Games in 2017 considering we are 6 years removed from the start of the 8th gen.  I didn't actually realize it was this clear until now.

thats convenient and all but if you go back even further it becomes a mess, gameboy and gameboy color are considered different generations for example, despite the difference being nothing more than a feature upgrade often associated with mid-gen revisions, where clearly the gen jump is gb to gba, then before 4th gen there is game and watch which is considered second gen despite fullfilling the same timeline launch ranges to be compqratively called 3rd gen.

its messy, game and watch should be first gen, gb second, gba third, psp and ds forth, vita and 3ds fifth, i hate how they get lumped into the same gen as home consoles because theyre platforms that deserve to be recognized independently from home consoles, just as the switch should, rightfully, be considered a first gen hybrid platform.

crap like ps4 pro and scorpio muddy the waters of clear console generations even further.

indeed, ive hated the way its defined for a long time now, because it flip flops between release timeframe and spec changes on the fly, utterly silly at this point especially now we are getting mud gen upgrades significant enough that they could be considered different generations by previous qualifiction (gb gen 4 gbc gen 5) for example.

With demand currently a fair bit higher then supply it shouldn't be settling at xbox one numbers anytime soon.  That wouldn't be a good number.
