Forums - Nintendo - Reggie on why the New 2DS XL exists, 90% of 3DS unit sales have been with stereoscopic 3D

“If you look life-to-date at the overall performance of the platform, almost 90% of the unit sales have been with 3D visual capability. So maybe said a different way, 2DS to date has represented only 11% of the total volume base. What that tells me is that for the vast majority of consumers, 3D is an important feature.”

This conclusion is wrong. There hasnt even been an serious alternative to the 3D models.

If it weren't for threads like these frequently reminding me I'd have completely forgotten that 3D is even a feature. :L

I guess it's good to have a premium 3DS without having to pay for the useless gimmick, but I don't think a $50 difference was really stopping people, but who knows!

The Nintendo 2DS really focused on that entry level gamer, the four-, five-, six-year old that is just getting into gaming, but wants to play Mario Kart, wants to have a Super Mario Bros. experience, wants to play Pokémon.

Reggie, don't you know that four and five year olds aren't supposed to be playing Mario Kart and Pokemon? Rated E is for everyone 6 and up! And that you're supposed to be 10 to play Super Smash Bros.? Such a bad role model!

Anyways, we'll see what comes of this. I am still confused as to its existance. Also, yes, 89% of sales may be a 3D-enabled unit, but I have one and I never use the 3D feature on mine.

Strange, is this the way the american system works? For us in Germany Mario Kart is rated '0' (the number indicates age), so it has no age restriction at all.

10 years greatest game event!

He lied. Nintendo's earning show that it's no a 90/10 split.

In Europe, games like Mario are for everyone 3 and up.

But the system is only for kids who are 7 and up.

I'd like him to say the 90% rate. If the 2DS XL came out, with the crummy 2DS version, side by side. It be a lot lower. I wanted the 2DS XL, 5 years ago.

I like how there is another budget version that doesn't look like a weird tombstone :p

I enjoy the sense of depth that it adds to the picture.  From the comments here, I see a number of other people leave the slider on more often than not as well.

They should have done this a long time ago.

"What that tells me is that for the vast majority of consumers, 3D is an important feature."

This is patently false in my observations. I have a large number of friends and family that own a 3DS (mostly XL) and NONE of them ever use the 3D functionality. All the sales between the 2DS and 3DS line demonstrate is that most people prefer the clamshell form function for a variety of reasons. I bet at $50 less, the new 2DS will outsell its 3DS competitors if it had normalized color options. Its just a superior option.

742 / 6,612 = .1122. Reggie's numbers are good.

It's sales speak, but he's not lying.
