I really feel like Mario Kart and Smash Bros are the two Nintendo games that DON'T NEED a new game this gen and should just be deluxe versions with added content. They have already pretty much mastered both series, the only real big thing that would stand out now would be a huge leap in graphics and that isn't gonna happen on the Switch. In fact I don't think a huge leap in graphics would be all that interesting since neither games have realistic art styles so the graphics are already good enough to make better graphics kinda unnecessary. Sure they should eventually have an MK9 and SSB5, but I think a deluxe port of the Wii U games is perfectly fine for the next few years and likely the gen, unless they come up with some whole new spin on these two series. I'd rather Nintendo come up with a new smash up of characters to be a third piece of their character smash up games to go along with mario kart and smash bros. Don't know what that would be, but a new series would be a welcome addition rather than trying improve every gen on two series that have already reached near perfection. We have a racing smash up and a fighting smash up...what else could we have? hmm... I can't think of anything off the top of my head, but at the very least they should focus those resources on other IPs like Metroid or F-zero |
Yeah, no, very much disagree. ESPECIALLY with Smash. Smash 4 was held back by the 3DS so the Switch being more powerful and not having to deal with that will allow for a significant technical leap if Nintendo applies themselves to that. Also, there's plenty of flaws in Smash as a package that need addressing. Singleplayer is still very lacking is the most obvious one, online features could use enriching (there's much more that could be done to allow for you to create very specifically designed tournaments). And there are plenty of new characters they could add.
And this idea they've perfected a franchise has been put forth many times in the past with other franchises they have and thank goodness they didn't listen because otherwise there are great games we would have never gotten.
And when I say they NEED it, I mean that right now they need all hands on deck, every big gun NEEDS to be here. The Switch is coming off the heels of the Wii U, they need to make the absolute strongest impression possible and dropping two hugely hyped franchises would not help. The Deluxe versions will be received well enough so long as people believe MK9 and SSB5 are coming. The moment people think these are replacements, that could turn very bad.
Also, the assumption that it's either resources go to MK9/SSB5 OR go to Metroid or F-Zero is obviously fallacious. Nintendo has the resources and the teams behind those two games cannot be assumed to be transferable to those projects. And besides, Nintendo needs all the above. They can't afford to be playing either-or with major IP right now.
