No, it's because Nintendo will price it higher this time around and the SNES wasn't a phenomenon in its original form, so demand won't reach the same levels.
Going further with this and using Ka-pi's wish for a N64 Mini, that one would probably have a hard time selling out.

You forgot about revisionist gaming media, though. I'm sure there are enough young people out there who actually think Yoshi's Island is superior to Zelda II because they never played either game. Many people swallowed the kool-aid that Gamecube and N64 are superior to the NES (and "3D over 2D OMG!") and could be tricked into buying into the N64 Mini.
OT: I'm not sure if I'll buy the SNES Mini. The Switch will play all those SNES games in handheld mode when Christmas comes around and I like to have my games in one place.
