Forums - Gaming - Remember Evolve? Disappointments general talk

The Borderlands people making Battleborn and citing all their resources going into it and felt like within weeks after launch no one cared about it.

Unfortunately, Battleborn went into direct competition with Blizzard's Overwatch. They both released around the same time.

It's really interesting that Borderlands was also somewhat of a copy of Diablo, touting it in media as "FPS Diablo". Then they release the same game Blizzard is making. Makes you wonder if they have someone on the inside their feeding them info on ideas.

It could have been good, but Overwatch basically destroyed it. How do you go against one of the, if not the single most venerated developer with their own game?

Destiny 2 announcing their DLC plans now reminds me of the early goings of Evolve.

Fortunately for Bungie, the Destiny crowd seems to be very loyal. Reminds me of Call of Duty crowd and Halo.

Obligatory:

"Just for comparison Uncharted 4 was 20x bigger than Splatoon 2. This shows the huge difference between Sony's first-party games and Nintendo's first-party games."

I heard the gameplay was actually pretty good. Never bought it though since I didn't know anyone else with it and I wasn't about to play such a strategic game with randoms.

Every game and their mother gets hyped to death these days. But when you are around a little longer, you saw Evolve falling off a cliff long before release. It isn't even the worst example imo. Titanfall was way worse if you ask me. That game was hyped by Microsoft like there's no tomorrow, got called Game of the Generation and all that silly stuff. All although it was quite obvious that the game was lacking seriously in content. Nobody cared, everybody hyped.

Oh, and just to make it clear, both of those games may be good games and all, but both just didn't live up to expectations. In both cases I predicted it long before, in both cases I got called a fanboy. In case of Titanfall I think I was even moderated, but I can't quite remember.

Anyway, simple rule for now and future use: Don't believe the hype. Except when it's GTA or Zelda or something. =P

I guess I was dissapointed by MGS V.It was still a good game, I felt it was lackluster in many departments, such as story, music, lack of bases to sneak inside and so on

I agree, me and my friend talk about this all the time cuz we are huge MGS fans. Our theory is that MGS5 became a swampy bucket of ingredients without enough time in the oven for many reasons:

1. Management decisions. Konami and Kojima were at odds over the whole game, the funding going into it, and ultimately, Konami wanted two smaller games while Kojima wanted just one.
2. Change in direction: Kojima decided to change parts of the story to reflect what was going on at Konami. He removed some of the focus from the main narrative and decided to focus on the metaphor of Konami. For instance, the entire subplot of the language disease. The isolating people, the casualties, the "traitor boss" introducing it. It's definitely a metaphor for how konami was reseated with their new leader who isolated kojipro, and cut them off from the company with no communication.
3. Not enough time or manpower: MGS5 is clearly the biggest MGS undertaking. Playing it, there was so, so much content in it, but for whatever reason, it feels loosely strung together. There's a lack of coherency. On top of which, there is only Africa and the Middle East, despite being able to base anywhere in the world.

To sum it up, the game feels like it's missing a lot of content and overarcing storyline. There are many substories, but they don't feel connected in any tangible way. They introduce Quiet, and it's like, she has no real concrete importance. Same goes for the kids. It's just off, and don't even get me started about Ground Zeroes, a SIXTY DOLLAR demo that could've easily just been part of Phantom Pain.

It's really sad. Still a great game, but comparing it to my favorite MGS (MGS3) it's missing "spirit".

Couldnt agree more. Its really sad that the game was affected due to all the drama that occurred betwenn kojima and Konami.Well, hopefully Kojima can make the game he wants with death Stranding.

My (locked) thread about how difficulty should be a decision for the developers, not the gamers.

Heck I got it when it was free and didn't like it.

One game that comes to mind is Xenoblade Chronicles X. Nothing wrong with the game itself, I just went along with the hype and I don't usually even like those kinds of games. Yet I still paid full price for it and only played like 5 hours of it. Again, I don't think it was a bad game, it just wasn't MY kind of game.

Evolve? Never cared for it.

I do feel that many games this gen have been overhyped and failed to deliver.

I don't buy into the hype for most of these hyped games. Not to say I don't fail, as I bought into my personal hype for FFXIII and that fell flat.

But generally these "hyped" games don't appeal that much to me, but the games that are hyped and end up following through even if I buy it day one do.

Some examples include Nioh, FFXV, Fallout 4, ROTKXIII, Dragon Quest Heroes. I bought all these day 1 and they were definitely satisfying and perfectly met their respective hype. Games like Star Ocean 5, ME Andromeda, The Order 1886, No Man's Sky, Evolve etc. all gave me the feeling of something being missing so not even a purchase yet. Though I may end up picking up SOV, and ME down the line when they are cheap.
