Forums - Nintendo - Will Breath of the Wild finally dethrone Ocarina of Time for people? Let's look at the facts

Nostalgia factor >>>>>>>>> Everything else in the known universe.

So; no, probably not.

No way, we talking about 1st generation of 3D games, and leap going from 2D games to 3D games was biggest ever in gaming industry. That goes especially for Zelda OoT, 1st 3D Zelda for its time was almost perfect that made some standards for rest of industry. There is reason why Zelda OoT is game with highest metascore in history of gaming with score of 99.

But I think that Zelda BotW can be best Zelda after OoT.

Nope, far to different

Even discounting nostalgia I still think Ocarina wipes the floor with subsequent Zelda games, with its epic sense of adventure, spectacular dungeons, memorable bosses, fantastic music, etc.
The later games, while they excelled in many areas, just didn't quite have the same "complete package" feeling, they all had at least some areas where they fell a little short.

I'm not the greatest Zelda fan and didn't enjoy Ocarina as much as many other N64 titles. It probably wouldn't make my top ten of N64 favourite games. The Zelda game that I loved the most was Wind waker and see a lot of parallels with Breath of the Wild and Windwaker.

I tried to get into Ocarina again on 3DS but lost interest as there was always something else to play. If I play Breath of the Wild for more than about 5 hours which I'm sure I will it would have surpassed Ocarina for me. In comparison Mario 64 I must have played for 100s of hours on both N64 and DS.

I think Windwaker was the first Zelda game where I played more hours on that than I did on the format's mario game (Sunshine). I reckon I put in 2x the time on Windwaker. With the wii it was straight back to Mario as I definitely spent more time on the 2 Mario Galaxy games over Twilight Princess and Skyward Sword which to be honest I never liked that much. At that point the games seemed very dated compared to games on other formats.

I see people just chalk Ocarina of Time being the best up to nostalgia again. "Meh, just the nostalgia talking." Oh people, people, people.

Anyway, I don't think so, Ocarina of Time is monumental. Breath of the Wild is however likely the best game they made since at least Super Mario Galaxy 10 years ago and it will definitely be excellent, but will it change gaming like Ocarina did? I don't think so and OoT will probably remain being fondly remembered for it's feats and advancements. Ocarina also has a 99 metacritic which BotW isn't going to beat so OoT will also at least remain on that throne. Personally the way it looks now, Breath of the Wild has a fair shot at becoming my 3-5 all-time favorite Zelda game, for the number 1 or 2 spot though it would have to go beyond excellent, and steer gaming in a certain direction through it's innovation. Least of all, tears need to be shed when the credits roll by at the end.

I played Ocarina for the first time last year on the 3DS. It's a masterpiece of game design with phenomenal pacing. Here's an exerpt of what I said about my opinion on the game after my first full playthrough. "While I wouldn't say this is definitively the best game of all time, Ocarina of time is mechanically a timeless masterpiece."

It's not nostalgia, it's just an incredible game.

A lot of OOT's praise is that it had the luxury of being the first 3D Zelda, any 3D Zelda could have been released back then and the same result would have occurred due to how the industry was at the time, it was the technical aspests that elevated OOT's legacy rather than anything done specific to the series approach. In a straight up comparison some of the following games are overall better.

BOTW will likely be a much better game than OOT but it won't match the near perfect review scores for various reasons although it could be close to them, the next major Zelda title with the features of the Switch has a good chance at matching the score building on BOTW.

That's not exactly true, game itself was almost perfect for that time, it was great in every sense and in same time doing so many things for 1st time in gaming industry, OoT had huge influence on whole gaming industry.

BotW can be great game, but hardly can be better game than OoT was in 98".

You basically said nothing that disproved what I said nor is anyone saying it's not a great game, I've pointed out OOT's praise mainly stems from it's technical achivements I.E what impacted the industry and not from anything it did for the approach of the series which is true. Story, struture and approach wise the game was blow for blow practically the same as ALTTP it's just that OOT had the 3D technical achivements behind it, all the games after OOT with the exception of TP made significant changes to the approach and structure.
