I think most of us know by now that when a Japanese title showcases sexual themes, those themes usually get censored when it comes abroad. Well, I just came across an article on how RE7's gore was toned down for the Japanese audience. And before anyone starts spliting hair, yes, Capcom is a Japanese company. But it's more evident that gore and violence are more acceptable here in the west while open sexuality is more acceptable in Japan. Here is the RE7 article with video, and yes, there are spoliers.
Like other games, Capcom's new horror title Resident Evil 7 had its blood and gore toned down for Japan. Some of this was spotlighted in a new video from Censored Gaming, which begins by comparing a scene involving the poor deputy David Anderson. This post contains some Resident Evil 7 story spoilers.
As spotted and reported on by Kotaku, in the US version, he's murdered with a shovel, with his head put into a refrigerator for the player to discover. In Japan, Anderson's head stays attached to his body during the shovel attack and all the player sees is a picture of Anderson in the refrigerator. Later in the story, in the US edition, the player must reach their hand inside Anderson's body through the neck to retrieve a key in his stomach. In Japan, the player walks up to Anderson's corpse and the key is sitting in plain sight. Watch the video to see the differences for yourself.
