I want a Sun/Moon 2 where you begin the game in Kanto and travel around with Lillie as your rival and then go do postgame in Alola to see a league established there that you complete. Then, you see that Anabel created a battle frontier in Alola that you can complete. I know it's too much and will never happen, but I can dream.

I can't see a sequel happening because Black 2 and White 2 sold shit compared to Black and White, and we know Nintendo cares money

Still sold a whopping 8 million though (that's more than any 3rd version besides Yellow).

Third Versions are cheaper to make though, its pretty much taking Pokemon Diamond and Pearl and adding a new legendary

I personally would like to see pokemon Z as a third version on 3DS in 2015/2016 (with zygarde forms, ash greninja, volcanion, more megas, and acompaining the anime series). And sun and moon released in 2017 crossplatform between switch and 3DS. But that didnt happen...

Well, now first pokemon game i want on switch is Pokemon Thunder Yellow and Water blue remakes exclusive for switch, with a Full 3D world with free camera control. By end of year.

I hope they won't rush through gen 7 and that we will get at least one other game before the next gen starts.

I'd personally like to see gen 1 remakes, since the only gen 1 game I ever played was Pokémon Yellow on virtual console last year, and it was horribly dated. Gen 4 remakes would be fine too, I haven't played Platinum in a long time.

Well if you want to play the original games, you can always try FireRed/LeafGreen. They're definitely nowhere near as dated... but that doesn't mean I don't want it remade in shiny HD graphics with good music and all.

Yeah, maybe I should do that. My Game Boy Micro still works fine and I guess I could get the games quite cheap.

I'd still like new remakes better though.

I think everything will be on Switch in the future because Nintendo needs the Switch to be a success.

2017 - Pokémon Stars (Switch)
2018 - Next Pokémon Generation (Switch)
2019 - Pokémon Diamond / Pearl Remake (Switch)

I think their biggest hurdle is to get the new engine running (since Pokémon was never a game heavy on graphics). Maybe they can test their new engine with Pokémon Stars (if that turns out to be real) and then build on that with a new generation.

Very much a noob. Never played, or owned any of them, as Nintendo has never been my thing. Might change with the switch. And so, I'm curious. Why is there a 3rd version... Or even 2 versions of the same game at all anyway? Why does one pick gold over silver, and how does crystal play into it?

That seems pretty unlikely. I can't see there only being a 2 year gap between gen 7 and 8. Not sure I'd even want a gen that quick. It would be good to get more Pokemon stuff sooner I guess, but you'd have to wonder if they rushed it to get it out so quick and because of that it could end up a subpar Pokemon game.

Agreed, there's no way they'd abandon Sun and Moon that fast after it has been the most sucessful Pokemon game in a long while. Whenever the proper next gen Switch Pokemon game will release I'd expect a complete overhaul, with a proper gigantic 3D world, and finally 3rd person camera. So that will take a few years at least. They can't make that in a year.

Stars on Switch is pretty much the 3rd version.

Beyond that, I wouldn't at all be surprised to see Diamond and Pearl get the remake treatment.

I hope not. Leave remakes of the best generation for an all new generation made for the Switch.

There are two versions to encourage communication between players. While story and level design are identical, the availabilty of the Pokémon is not. One of the main goals of the Pokémon games is to catch them all, but each version has about a dozen of Pokémon that are exclusive to it, so the collection (the Pokédex) cannot be completed without trading. There are also decisions to make, like which evolution you want a one-time Pokémon to have and which starter Pokémon you pick; this raises the number of trade partners a player needs to have, because save files of only two players aren't going to cut it.

You pick Gold over Silver because you prefer the color or the exclusive Pokémon of one version, although the Pokémon only matter in the sense that they will be easier to obtain. The third version which is released later offers a slightly different twist on the story, possibly minor gameplay tweaks and different availability of Pokémon. There isn't much of a benefit to wait for a third version or doubledip, it's first and foremost about providing an additional option that might draw in gamers who have yet to buy any version.

Can't believe I read the entire post before realizing who responded... But, in other words, the game forces you to be social?  I may still give it a try, if it comes to switch (and I actually get a switch.)  It does sound well thought out, even if I have to trade with others.  I can't see myself training a pokemon just to give it away...  That's my blood, sweat, and tears.

It's two years because they won't need a lot of resources for Pokémon Stars (if it exists). Also, we've always had Pokémon games yearly or bi-yearly.

Black / White 2 - 2012

X / Y - 2013

Omega Ruby / Alpha Sapphire - 2014

Sun / Moon - 2016

In fact, we've never had to wait more than two years between core Pokémon games since the originals released in 1996. You could say it's part of Gamefreak's strategy to release Pokémon games regularly to keep the franchise in people's minds. Gamefreak has never changed that strategy and they've witnessed multiple generational leaps with Pokémon.
