There are two versions to encourage communication between players. While story and level design are identical, the availabilty of the Pokémon is not. One of the main goals of the Pokémon games is to catch them all, but each version has about a dozen of Pokémon that are exclusive to it, so the collection (the Pokédex) cannot be completed without trading. There are also decisions to make, like which evolution you want a one-time Pokémon to have and which starter Pokémon you pick; this raises the number of trade partners a player needs to have, because save files of only two players aren't going to cut it. You pick Gold over Silver because you prefer the color or the exclusive Pokémon of one version, although the Pokémon only matter in the sense that they will be easier to obtain. The third version which is released later offers a slightly different twist on the story, possibly minor gameplay tweaks and different availability of Pokémon. There isn't much of a benefit to wait for a third version or doubledip, it's first and foremost about providing an additional option that might draw in gamers who have yet to buy any version. |
Can't believe I read the entire post before realizing who responded... But, in other words, the game forces you to be social? I may still give it a try, if it comes to switch (and I actually get a switch.) It does sound well thought out, even if I have to trade with others. I can't see myself training a pokemon just to give it away... That's my blood, sweat, and tears.
