Doesn't look like a reliable source. But I hope that it's true and Playstation 5 will be backward compatible again.
Most early release for Playstation 5 I can see happening is 2019.

I am not exactly sure how they will go forward with naming systems, but whatever they do, there is no doubt PlayStation software will play on all PlayStation devices going forward.
At this point I think Sony should be upgrading on every new fabrication process. PS4 revisions for 10nm, 7nm, and 3nm should happen in 2018, 2020, and 2023. They should continue to support the PS4 and PS4 OS going forward, and maybe just rebrand things under the PlayStation OS.
I also think PSVR revisions should be happening at the same rate. A PSVR 2 in 2018 with 1440P HDR display, a PSVR 3 in 2020 with 1800P, and a 4K PSVR 4 in 2023. Again, they need to keep compatability across devices, at least at the headset/display level. With perhapps better tracking equipment and controllers being required at some point, but again being back and forward compatable between all PS4 products.
At this point the PSOS needs to compete with Windows, iOS, and Android. That means more hardware, more software, and forward/backwards compatability. All PlayStation software running on all PlayStation devices Home or mobile. This is really the only route they can take to have continued success.

Still using discs? or digital compatibility only?

I doubt Sony is worried about getting into any and every market, like MS is. You don't succeed by entering a market 2-3 years or more too late, that already has a VERY clear 1st and 2nd winner and hope to spend your way to 1st, again, like MS. In fact, they are doing the exact opposite, getting rid of or spending less money on markets they aren't doing so hot in. It's a much better business plan for them at this point.
20mins to sounds like a pompous ass that talks about nothing? no one cares if the chips are confused or basic maths or the ghostbusters game play.
Confirms that these are rumors and all conflicting lol.
This could have been a 2min video about hopg the PS5 is backwards compatibility and using new amd cpu

Same. They've been good about it in the past. Only changing to and from teh C3ll messed things up. |
Emulating "teh c3ll" is entirely possible on the Playstation 4. If Sony took the same approach as Microsoft.
| Kerotan said: I don't care about the source or this rumour because it's probably not a reliable insider. But my thoughts on the ps5 being backwards compatible. I think it's a must. The ps3 to ps4 transition you can understand because it's so different. But the ps4 uses conventional parts. If the ps5 isn't BC I'll be dissapointed. |
When it comes to Backwards compatability, I think Sony has learned the hard way.
Basically, if they are forced to include older processors for Emulation, they simply won't bother as it drives up the cost of manufacturing far to much.
Nintendo has managed to get away with it for the last few console generations because it's chips weren't large and expensive to begin with.
If Sony decides to use different hardware (Aka. Not PC.) and breaks backwards compatability, they will likely be forced to take a software approach.
| Barkley said: Also it's hard to say if the PS5 will be compatible with ps1 titles.... I mean the ps4 still isn't for no apparent reason... after three years. |
Actually, there is a reason why the PS4 isn't compatible with PS1 titles.
It can't read CD's. The Xbox One ironically can though.
No idea why Sony chose the Blu-Ray drive they did, it wasn't the best decision.
| binary solo said: Will it be BC like Xb one is BC with 360? or will it be truly BC? Xb one and 360 are a lot more similar than PS3 and PS4, but MS could not make Xb one properly BC with 360. |
Microsoft's approach is probably the best way without having the old hardware in the new console.
But Microsoft isn't brute-forcing the Emulation either... And they are doing ample testing and optimizing and patching of every title.
Plus, because of stupid license agreements, Microsoft isn't allowed to do a blanket backwards compatability rollout, which sucks.

I also expect a low-mid Vega GPU. One I saw the leaked rumors for was 12 Tflops, with 16 GB of HBM2 RAM. I think they may use that one for a base, but lower the performance slightly for heat reasons to about 11 Tflops, with maybe 12 GB of RAM. |
Ryzen and Vega will be old and slow in 2020.

The video is all speculation, but I'm pretty certain the PS5 will be at least BC with PS4 games because of the x86 architecture. Sony knows that they will get a whole lot of shit if they don't do it. It's also a great way to bring the PS4 userbase over to the PS5, especially if the launch lineup isn't up to snuff.

It is not about spending your way to first place, it is about building an ecosystem where you can stay engaged with your customer 24/7 and anywhere they go. Any company that does not have that has no future in consumer electronics and operating systems. Microsoft knows that they can not survive on PC alone, Apple and Google know they can't survive on Phones alone, and Sony had better be fully aware that they can not rely on consoles alone.
For PlayStation to remain a viable OS in the marketplace Sony has to be competitive with the other OS's on the market. All other OS's are becoming available on TVs, Set Top Boxes, Tablets, Laptops, Phones, consoles, PCs, and pretty much every other little nik nak on the market. An OS that ties your content to one piece of hardware is going to be a joke in the next 5 years. Games are being built on scalable engines, and phones with XBO/PS4 level capability are going to be here in the next 2 - 3 years. The only difference between games going forward is going to be resolution and frame rate. If Sony can not offer an array of products that massivly increase the value of your software library, then there will be no place in the market for PlayStation.
They don't have to be the number one Phone maker, Tablet Maker, Laptop Maker, Home Assistant Maker, or Wearable Maker. But, they damn sure better have those products available for the 55M+ people that are buying into their eycosystem. Build every product around the same basic hardware, and cut R&D cost massivly. Sell all products at a profit, so even if they only have 30M PS Phone users and 15M PS Laptop users, at least the product is profitable. Most of all, stop competeing against yourself by building products with other companies OSs. All Bravia and Xperia device need to run on a Sony OS, and help create more incentive for app creation on the platform.
If Sony can not run on its own OS, and build its own ecosystem, then they have no need to be in the hardware business. They are better off just supplying chips and tech to other companies. At that point they should sell off their TV, Camera, Phone, Gaming, Music, and Movie business, because they are no longer a consumer products company.

I wouldn't trust any rumours just yet, but yeah, it'd be a surprise if PS5 wasn't backwards compatible. It's likely to use the same x86 architecture that PS4 uses, so backwards compatibility shouldn't be too difficult to pull off.

2019, but nice use of hyperbole. Will it be top of the line by then? No. But, that makes it perfect for a $399 game console.

This is the most ridiculous argument I have ever heard. I guess all of those companies that make millions on cell phones with Android on them should just quit making those millions. I mean, it's not their OS, so fuck'em. Hell, Windows Mobile should have crushed the competition. Everyone already has Windows on their PCs after all.
Sony can just make OS's for their remaining HW, continue to make millions, and be fine. The masses don't care about having a PS OS on everything they own. IF they wanted a unified OS, the PS4 wouldn't even be selling so well. Everyone would stick with Android tablets and TV boxes.
