Forums - Gaming Discussion - PlayStation may win many battles, But Windows will win the war.

Many people feel PC gaming is already bigger than console. Hence Microsoft have taken back seat on console and releasing all games on PC now. I am not sure how much money PC software makes in comparison to consoles. But console will exist IMO as I do not see everyone gaming on PC and I think gfx will be irrelevant in next 5-10yrs.

why buy a pc when a phone can do everything joe average needs? also, gaming is a entertainment business and if i'm not mistaken sony is much more an entertainment company than microsoft.

And yet by moving towards PC Microsoft would actually be killing Xbox off and reducing it to nothing but branding, where as PlayStation if still around at that point would be its own thing.

The fact of the matter is that PlayStation is more popular than Xbox, and if your only defense against that reality is to try and rope in windows as a viable comparative platform you are doing nothing but conceeding the fact of PlayStation being more popular.

When it comes to traditional games ($60 buy the game, play the game) console definitely exceeds PC. Here's the figures for 2015 from Superata:

PC: £22.5 Billion

Consoles: £17.6 Billion

So that may seem to suggest PC's are the bigger market, however £12 Billion of the PC figure is from FTP MMO's, and £5.6 Billion is from Facebook Games and other Social Network Games. Leaving only £4.9 Billion for your more traditional, buy the game play the game titles.

So PC is bigger including FTP and Social, but for the rest console is far bigger.

Though with the increasing adoption of FTP and MMO's on consoles that gap could potentially decrease.

Inside out opinion as usual. Xbox will not go anywhere. Both brands coexist specifically because no matter what happens, people will always want a console that is not Japanese...

Eh.... why? xD

Why would anyone buy a dedicated gaming PC when any console on the planet can play games just as well at the same graphical fidelity? Now, the only true advantage PCs have is graphics. Thats not something that can last forever.

There, fixed that for you.

There are a lot of reasons to chose a console over a PC or vice versa. Both will be obsolete when you can simply put your phone in a dock like the Switch and have the exact same experience. Or put your phone in a headset and have full VR.

Perhaps later there will be self contained lightweight headsets not much bigger than glasses in the future, linked to your phone. Or perhaps the lightweight glasses will be the phone and touchscreen replaced by pupil tracking and mind control. Carrying a screen in your pocket won't last forever either.

What the fuck are you talking about?

What happens when a tablet can run perfect GC visuals, and easily connect to tv?
So, the future is Switch like.
so, nintendo is already ahead from its time.

One OS is not going to rule the entire tech industry. For one that is a monoply, and it is not allowable. Two, you don't want one company having complete control over everyone.

Sony can stick around as long as they continue to broaden the PlayStation OS functionality. If they start to bring in more non gaming apps, and change to a more Apple like closed ecosystem, than the current extreamly limited closed ecosystem, then PlayStation will not only stick around, but be one of the largest players in home and mobile computing.

The future is going to be based around OS and cloud wars. I think it will be Mircosoft vs Sony vs Google vs Apple, with Samsung having a chance if they start to transition fully to Tizen. These OS's will have hardware ecosystems built around them that range from slabphones to specialty phones, tablets to laptops, and consoles/set top boxes to PC's.

Having competition drives tech forward, and keeps everyone honest. That is not going to change in the next 20 years. The only surprise may come in the form of a new entrant. Otherwise, it is going to be competition as normal.
