Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Nintendo Online Subscription service: What do you want it be?

But ONLINE SERVICES ARE A SERVICE OR UTILITY. Do you ever wonder why sites like Wikipedia ask for money to keep their site up? It costs money to keep up a server. I'm referring to online services, not games. Where'd you get games from? Online is free for those devices now, but for Nintendo that's because they kept paying out of pocket to keep their servers up. If it didn't cost anything to run a server, we'd still have Mario Kart DS Servers and Devil's Third servers. Nintendo was nice enough to allow free online. Like I said, Sony and Microsoft don't make you pay because they're dicks. There's a reason. PS3 had free online for a while, but then they realized they could make money off it.

Also lol at the bolded, you just destroyed your entire argument by admitting the paywall is solely for additional profits, not maintaining servers as you were trying to claim earlier. Btw PS3 still has free online.

Touché XD. Sony/Nintendo/MS are the three of them evil and greedy bastards. That's for certain, they want our money. They saw an opportunity to bank more cash with paid services, and they suceeded. I think we should try to convince Nintendo to not do the same, which will probably not happen (I'm 99% sure). If not, well, we'll have to pay if we want to play online. I feel like I'm having a S&M relationship lately with gaming world. I fell constantly robbed, but I can't quit. Sadly I've just assumed that as "normal", but it shouldn't be.

I was going to say "not exist". I guess free is better.

I would have loved to see a Wii U/3ds/switch triangle like Playstation.

One game, NES/SNES, and not getting to keep them are three things they are doing wrong.

I don't think they are.

Look at how much people spend on Steam sales only to let them sit in a folder never to be played. I see the same with free games on XBLive. People think they'll play them at some point. They don't.

Doing the monthly game free means you download it, making it a rental increases the chances it will actually get played before the month ends. If they're getting updated with 2 player modes and online, that too increases the chance they'll see some playtime.

OT - Tournaments with some coins/prizes would be nice. Being able to see if there are other people playing nearby. Swapping/lending VC games. I hope download play is back and isn't part of the sub.

ooooorrrrr let us keep them as long as we're subscribed and then gamers can play the games on their own time...

Bet with Adamblaziken:

I bet that on launch the Nintendo Switch will have no built in in-game voice chat. He bets that it will. The winner gets six months of avatar control over the other user.

It doesn't have to be.

Look, Splatoon 2 looks really cool. We all want to play that online.

However, Nintendo did say the online subscription is coming in fall, and it'll have a free trial before that. Since Splatoon 2 comes out in summer, everyone will have a chance to play that online for at least a while... then when we've already had that experience and the paywall comes, well, we just don't pay it. And not only do we not pay it, but we spam Nintendo's social media accounts with comments about it.

I mean, it can work. If only like 2% of Switch owners subscribe, Nintendo's going to have second thoughts. Look at the backlash the Xbox One had when it was announced - it prompted Microsoft to make changes to it. If there is any time when we can do something about it, that time is now.

Now I won't be able to be part of that since I won't actually own a Switch so soon... but I really hope the people stick together and do something about it. Nintendo is already charging a considerable price for the console and downright abusive prices for everything else related to it. We shouldn't be forced to pay even more to properly play the games we'll be paying to have.

I like that idea. I tend to play online games for a couple of months, so once I burn out Splatoon 2, I don't really have any reasom to pay for the suscription. Might as well hapoen with more people.

Was going to see free, but how about forgotten instead?

Made a bet with LipeJJ and HylianYoshi that the XB1 will reach 30 million before Wii U reaches 15 million. Loser has to get avatar picked by winner for 6 months (or if I lose, either 6 months avatar control for both Lipe and Hylian, or my patrick avatar comes back forever).

Sorry man, I'm definitely not gonna be able to do that, and going by Xbox and Playstation, I doubt enough people will. The best we can hope for is the subscription fee to be cheap.

If the free NES/SNES game for only 30 days is the only perk, then it should be priced much cheaper than Sony's and Microsoft's online. Like $20-30. And even that may be too much since retro roms including online functionality, although not legal, has existed for a long time already and are easily accessible.

Even less than that. Wi 20-30€ in VC games you could get 4-8 games depending on the price and discounts avalible. I really hope Nintendo doesn't go all the way greedy with their online fees, or it's going to be a shitshow.

You know it deserves the GOTY.

So, a lot of people want a free online service. That is obvious.
How about the quality?
