Sadly, that about sums up why I am not a mod.

As Axum said though, I left on great terms . Renewal is important. There is no sense in an enormous mod team, so those that are there should be able to contribute regularly and consistently.

One thing I didn't realize I would miss is just casually checking someone's mod history. I was a mod for so long I forgot its not just something anyone can do

You were actually my favorite new mod over the past two years. Sorry to see you go. You were not very active, but you were around when no one else was. Which is a plus.

Thanks Spurge.

And yes, we definitely need a Sydney/Tokyo timezoned mod. But in the last few months, I honestly wasn't even fully accounting for that timezone.

You guys shouldn't a banned CaptainExplosion for this post. He was making an American Dad joke, y'know, cause my avatar is Roger? Don't you guys watch American Dad? Cause if not then you need to make that a priority for this round of hiring.

Sigs are dumb. And so are you!

Yeah, that was my bad. That particular post didn't warrant moderation. I'm vaguely aware of American Dad, but don't follow it, since it's by the same guy who makes Family Guy...which I can only really tolerate for a few minutes. Not my kind of humor.

Still, he was out of line in at least one other thread, and he does have a habit of remarks like this. I'll shave a day off, as it's less severe than I originally thought... but the offense is unchanged.

I'm still waiting for my apology and the 5 day refund for accusing me to hate the Switch. I preordered it, so if anything I hate myself and my bank account.

I'm waiting.

But, "you are a troll" goes too far. No excuse for it, as arguments shouldn't ever turn personal like that.

Saying that someone is a troll isn't a personal insult. It is stating that a user is on the site for no reason other then to post to get a rise out of other users and cause a disturbance.

There's one user on here that's been banned about 10 times over the last couple of months, every time the ban runs out he comes on and gets immediately banned again, can't go a day of posting without being banned. That person is a troll, it's amazing that person is still not permanently banned when it's clear what his attentions are.

I don't see how calling such a persona  troll is "too far."

Also I agree with pretty much everything Rol says above.

If I was to edit the rule I'd simply ammend that it's only acceptable to call someone a troll if there's clear evidence of it, it shouldn't simply be "You said that person was a troll. *ban*."

It should be "You said that person was a troll, and looking at his posts I could definitely see why you would think that. *no ban*"

Calling someone a troll is a personal insult and that's why it falls under the category of Insults and Flaming. Saying someone is trolling is a fitting alternative.

Saying someone is a troll simply means that their actions on the site are primarily trying to recieve a negative reaction, it doesn't imply anything about them personally, it's just a comment on their actions on this site. The same as saying "someone is trolling." the only difference being that saying a user IS a troll means the users primary goal on the site is to cause a disturbance, rather then the trolling being just a periodic occurence.

I have a very simple outlook on all of it, though -  why call them anything at all? If you have a disagreement with a poster, debate the post. Take apart the things about their words that don't make sense/work. There's not a need to call them anything.

The main reason I have in the past called someone a Troll is mainly due to exasperation. That someone who is so obviously baiting and has no intention to use this site for anything than his own ammusement and aggrevating other users is seemingly allowed to continue (all-be-it usually after a period of "cooling off")

I'd argue the difference between being a troll - and trolling.  One is a personality, one is an action. "You are a troll" is saying that someone never adds anything to the conversation. It applies to every post they make.

Where as trolling can be on a post by post basis. "That comment comes off as trolling" indicates one individual action but doesn't paint the entire person as a troll.

"You are trolling" indicates the current actions come off as detrimental. As opposed to "you are a troll" implying that any action they take will come off as detrimental. IE convicting them of the crime before actually doing it.

This is very true

As for my own thoughts, using the word troll never really fixes arguments but instead just helps to fan the flames and makes it more personal and heated. Though I tend to avoid debates and threads, I've seen many instances where troll was used and I don't recall a time when that actually stopped any trolling from happening anyways

On the other hand, I feel there were instances when people where banned by saying 'trolling' or 'troll' but it didn't seem ban worthy

I would say it's best to moderate as a case by case basis, which seems to be what is going on right now so I don't really see the need for this to be fixed at the moment :/

I'd say this reflects my own view for the most part.

Though...that being said...I would definitely view it on a case by case basis. If someone comes into a thread about a game on one platform being cancelled, and posts a big list of every upcoming game on his platform of choice, I would be less inclined to defend that individual. If someone legimitately tries to discuss the topic, and gets called a troll for having a negative outlook, then I would absolutely find that to be out of line.

I realize that's a bit of an annoyance, when forum users would like to see consistency...but I'd say that learning to assess the situation is the benefit of having human moderators in the first place.
