Why was viv banned for so long? Did he not say recently he hadn't been moderated in a year?

This is his 3rd ban of 2017. 4 moderations total, so 7 days isn't a bad length.

Lol maybe Rol is right.  He may have lied to me.  Or else I just remembered wrong.  I'm drunk on vacation so that's very possible.

OK, so I guess my Elgato is coming tomorrow, and with that I'll attempt to start doing some let's plays. Now, I know that there are already forums dedicated to let's playing, the Something Awful forums in particular being very well known. However, I guess VGC is really the only forum I participate in. Now, there is not a special forum/sub-forum here for let's plays. So, I guess I was wondering what to do. I don't want to just make a thread on let's plays that I'll potentially do, because it seems like a cheap way of advertising myself (and indeed, my main goal would be to have people discussing and sharing let's plays with each other here, instead of me just trying to post them for my own gain, in my probably futile effort to build a bigger community here ). So, I guess I would be advised to post in the YT promoting thread? But I don't really want to spam there either.

I haven't been able to post this from the thread Bristow created due to my post in said thread resulting in a 10 day ban. Whilst I have discussed this off-site and apologised for my post upsetting the thread creator in question I figured I would comment here as well and I've had a while to write it.

I was debating returning to Vgchartz in general but figured I needed to say it myself as I hate the thought of people thinking I was trolling with the subject of my post. That comment (or lack of comment, just a picture) was a poor post on my behalf but it was never ever intended to be seen as a “troll” or “joke” post. I would never recommend someone to self harm and I would never joke about the topic.

Would I have done anything different if I could go back, sure I wouldn't have commented in general, self harming isn't going to be something I was going to openly talk about on a public forum. I figured a picture would be all I needed to say “hey this is how I deal with depression” but … clearly it was taken the wrong way and I probably should have known that. I probably should have known people who don't know me would have seen my comment and not known I was being serious and with a bad moderation history I don't blame the mods for banning me.

Whilst I know why I went in there that day and posted what I did I don't really want to explain here, so I'll refrain from posting controversial posts in the future.

Versus out.

Hopefully you start feeling better soon, and if you ever feel like commenting on VGChartz don't feel threatened. You are welcome. I hope you have a better year

Since it was brought up in the NPD thread, the mod team isn't doing a good job at employing rule 1.3. Of course there's a lot of responsibility that factors into said rule, but its usage helps to greatly accelerate the process of weeding out or correcting behavior that isn't welcome.

Rule 1.3 - Let's Talk About It (though there technically isn't a Rule 1.3 - but this is the closest thing to that description).

  • Generally, permanent bans are only handed out for extreme rule breaking, continued repeat offenses of the same rules, or actions that threaten the site's ability to function. However, the administrators and moderators reserve the right to permanently ban your account at any time if they feel you are a poor fit for the community, or a threat to the site. This will only be done through a consensus among the moderating staff.

Unless you meant Rule 13? Regardless, where does the above need attention, at the moment?

I think Rol's implying that you should permaban him

I believed that too. Issue is, I disagree. That's not how the system works (nor should work). Unless you're a known alt, or have a history that goes beyond what we find acceptable (in this case, we aren't there), we won't just hand out a Permanenet Ban. That last line is also critical.

Well, Rol does have 50 moderations

That is the rule I am speaking about.

If the mod team reserves the right to permanently ban people if certain conditions are met, it logically follows that the mod team has the right to temporarily ban people if they see fit.

In the NPD thread the discussion was about people who are no good, but don't get moderated because what they say and do doesn't violate the conventional rules and guidelines to a big enough degree to justify action. This is specifically about people with a very strong bias who write a lot of posts with very faulty conclusions. It's about people where the mod team sees a problem, but wonders how they could catch said people. All I am saying is that there is an easier way to do it.

We don't really need the rules for that.  From the terms of use:

http://www.vgchartz.com/terms-of-use.php

We have the right, but not the obligation, to take any of the following actions in our sole discretion at any time and for any reason without giving you any prior notice:

  1. Restrict, suspend, or terminate your access to all or any part of our Services;

Trying to win/sway things by popular vote or something? I don't see the point of bringing this up here when it's ultimately up to mods.

Can we ask questions of mods in this thread?

I have two.
1) Can we bet on when someone get banned. Or does making any mention of someone getting banned go against the "back seat moderating" rule?

2) Are you allowed to say "you disgust me" to people? Reading various political comments over time I have had the urge to say this many times. Yet it seems like it would probably get me moderated.

So what is the safest version of "you disgust me". Perhaps make it less personal with "your ideals" or "your idea" or "what you just said?

The general advice is that if you turn any forbidden word with a descriptive meaning into its definition, you won't get moderated.

"You disgust me" is blunt and therefore potentially leads to a moderation, but if you turn that into "your view of the world is appalling", you shouldn't encounter any problems with the mod team. Likewise, the word "idiot" is frowned upon, but telling someone that they aren't the brightest bulb in the room or the sharpest tool in the shed is perfectly fine.

Say the same thing in more words, that's all there is to it. You can be equally or more condescending without problems as long as you avoid being blunt and totally honest.

Where else should I bring it up? You cried foul when the "insult" you used on others was used on you.

I was talking about the ideas and you were attacking me as a person over and over in spite of me asking you to cut the shit out so we could get back to discussing the topic but no, you weren't insulting me by your book. Before you try to play innocent in this thread that weren't doing that, I'll nip it in the butt beforehand.

"You lack common sense" is blunt and totally honest, and it means exactly what it says. You made the argument that Nintendo needs to launch a 128GB Switch SKU for $350 when right now people can buy a $300 Switch and a 128GB micro SD card for under $50 which totals to more storage for a lower price. Someone who makes such an argument lacks common sense and saying so is not a condescending statement.

That's your arrogant opinion and it sounds just like your megalomaniac pitch for why you should be able to call people idiots because "you think it's true" about the person. I'll leave ya to your soapbox so you can drum up whatever support for yourself.
