Slightly different then what I have in mind.  The PS3 had option for users to install linux on it.  The problem, if you believe sony is it caused security issues having a user installed OS.  Sony was not working directly with the creators of the OS's that was going on to there system.

What I would like to see is a partnership between Nintendo and Nvidia.  Nvidia in control of updates to there OS and Nintendo in charge of there but working togeather to pervent any security concerns/compatiabilty issues.  Acording to Nvidia (https://blogs.nvidia.com/blog/2016/10/20/nintendo-switch/) they already worked with Nintendo to optimize there OS to work with there hardware, I believe if there was a desire to work togeather to achieve what am saying it would be very doable.

For users when you first logon what it would look like is a choise between to applications (nvidia or Nintendo )

Much less of an security issue than PSN... Anyway, the issue was that the optional OS made it possible to run unlicensed (=you don't need to pay royalties to Sony) games on PS3.

Fear that it could be affecting PSN profits might of been the real reason it was removed.  It a reasonable guess but to my knowledge wheather you believe it or not the only official statement from sony was they removed it due to security concerns.

Yes, it's common knowledge that Linux is a huge hole when it comes to security.

As a Linux user for a decade, I should know. There's not even decent antivirus and antimalware software available.

Nintendo games sell only on Nintendo system.

It will definitely have it's own OS..

Using something like Android can easily be hacked and you know how Nintendo is with hacking their systems

There's no real history of them using anything other than a proprietary OS, so I'm sticking with that.

A Nintendo OS.

Ooo! Good burn. Had to wait for it to cool down before I could touch it. If this comment was in my kitchen, I would have to open the windows.

Nintendo is not using their own OS. It will use the one Nvidia created for it.

It's a proprietary Linux, the same OS that NES Mini uses. Mini is to monetise the R&D that went to Switch development (and to test it in a market).

Um, it's not a tablet, period. The Switch is not a touch-screen only device, and tablets don't come equipped with multifunctional controllers with a ton of face buttons.

In any event, why would the Switch not utilize a proprietary OS like every other Nintendo console has before it?  iOS obviously ain't happening, and Android would cause way too many compatibility issues.

Again, it's not strictly a tablet / mobile device.  This is like asking why PS4/X1 don't use iOS or Android.

I'm just pointing out, that Wii U was the first Nintendo console to have an operating system. The DS, Wii and 3DS have just firmware and a graphical shell to access individual software (that's running directly on the hardware).

Interesting ,thanks for that.  I always assumed the Wii DS and 3DS all had some sort of basic OS that allowed the consoles to run different programs / apps like YouTube & Netflix as well as managing downloaded / saved content on the console.  Don't the 360 and PS3 have basic OS's instead of just firmware as well?

You know I was always wondering why no one ever used the dollar sign for $ony, but then I realized they have no money so it would be pointless.

Proprietary.
Way better optimized for gaming than Android. NVIDIA is helping a lot.

Proprietary, but if they're smart there store will have a corner for your general kind of tablet apps, and, while not being as loose as Google is, it would be nice if they won't be overly strict about who can develop for it.

I am hoping it is a proprietary OS, developed around scalability and multitasking.

Ultimately it should be built around making games as accessable as possible, while allowing other tasks to handled while games are in the background or even better something similar to the Xbox Snap feature.

I want Nintendo to be extreamly open to all types of software, all generes of games, multimedia apps, productivity and lifestyle apps, nothing from a legitimate developer or organisation should be denied.

Hopefully, in time it can grow to a respectable enough marketshare to go head to head with PSOS, XBOS, iOS, and Android.
