Forums - Gaming - One hour is more than enough to judge a game

I think it depends on what the game's main draw is. If its a platformer then it's usually easy to judge the game quite fast as in them the basic gameplay is probably the most important aspect, and an hour is more than enough to see if the gameplay work. However, if the game is strongly focused on storytelling, 1 hour usually isn't enough to judge whether a game's story is good or not.

Twilight Princess is another great example. It's not until the game gives you more freedom that the real adventure begins.

People mentioning Persona 4... huh? I liked it, even the first hour of it.

Persona 4 surely is my favorite game ever, but the first few hours are so boring.... Nothing happens at all, the intro is far too long. If you don't know the series, you have a lot of chances to get bored or discouraged. I stopped playing after 2 or 3 hours and put the game in a drawer. Luckily, I chose to bring it in vacations to try it again (I wanted to reduce my back log and didn't understand the awesome reviews of this game). After the introduction, I loved it and played something like 60 hours in 5 days.

If you often read threads about Persona 4, you'll see a lot of players stopping or complaining about the game when they're just a few hours in, it's just "normal behavior" with this game from what I've seen. The Persona 5 intro is much shorter and better ^^.

(And IMO the intro of Steins;Gate is kind of the same thing for different reasons : the MC is annoying, the beginning of the story a bit hard to follow, and it's also long to really start... But once again, the game is awesome after this slow start.)

Was about to say the exact same thing.

Pretty sure I actually liked the first hour of it.... so not sure what to say...

FF12 took be abit to "get".

I'm glad you feel this way, but it seems that most people who played it agree that it takes some time to get into it.

I even wrote a comment on the official psvita thread asking everyone what it is that they liked about it. Everyone was praising it as I was just worndering if there was something I was missing. The more I got to know the characters, the more I found myself caring about them. I assume that's the case with many jrpgs.

I can tell a game is good or not when the idea first enters a developers head.

I can tell before Chuck Norris tells if it's good or not before the idea enters developers head.

I can beat Chuck Norris up

Don't even get me started on Steins;Gate. I feel like punching the developers in the face. What were they thinking! Seriously. I tried so many times to play it and I find myself falling asleep.

I know I will eventually like it, but right now (I've only played for what feels like 2 hours) it is one of the least fun games I've ever played. Kresnik gave it a 10 and I trust him, but man does it start boring.

If you think one hours is enough to judge a game, your taste must be quite limited. There's a lot of games you can't really judge in just one hour. At best, you can judge them to need more time for a proper judgement, but that's not a proper judgement, is it? For example, I doubt a lot of people like Final Fantasy X's first hour, but a ton of people love the rest of the game.

Is this post to show blatant bias, or are you serious?

It is regarded as the best game ever by more people than any other game so it is not blatant bias.

Ocarina of Time called.

He heard you was talking shit.

I can finish a lot of my favourite games in an hour! Like Mega Man X or Mega Man 2 or Mega Man 3! Ok, that's a lot if Mega Man. But I can also finish Super Castlevania IV in an hour and Turtles in Time! And all those games are among the best there ever was.

But in the end it really depends on the game. There are games you can judge in one hour, there are games where it doesn't work out. Simple as that.

It's enough to judge a game, but not enough to rate a game.. really depends on the game
