Would you unfriend someone due to political differences?

Yes 53 21.54%

No 152 61.79%

Unsure 41 16.67%

Total:246

I usually think it shouldn't be a factor in what friends you choose but sometimes their support of issues can be a deal breaker if they clash so heavily with your view. Would you unfriend someone who you find out to be a pedophile? Outspoken nazi? We all likely have limits even though unfriending someone because they support Trump feels a bit strong.

Unfriending someone just because of their political differences is dumb as shit since you resort to getting yourself into nothing but petty ass group think that sets a dangerous path that's no different from the censorship that the Nazis practice ...

If you think your friend is ignorant on an issue of a particular view, then a good friend would at least try to educate them instead of chalking up insults at them ...

It's close minded as shit denying a person's contrary views altogether before it's even considered ...

I'm sorely disappointed about my generation ...

Fuck if I wanted clones of myself I'll just go ask research laboratories to do that instead making friends altogether ...

If anything, the 2016 election has outed quite a few people as to how they really feel about a great number of the issues that are polarizing the US.

So, maybe you learn something about some friends due to their political affiliations, or more specifically, stumping on public forums for said affiliations, but does that change any of the common ground you share that made you friends in the first place? Probably not.

As for trying to show someone the "light" or teach them the "right way of thinking" because you're trying to help them, I would really just let that kind of mentality go.

If you're not capable of doing that, then yes; you should probably stick exclusively to like minded cliques in echo chambers, free of any sort of meaningful discussion.

So you'd be friends with someone who subscribed to the neo-Nazi party? You'd be friends with someone who thinks women shouldn't vote?

I think a severe gap in political affiliation is perfect grounds for the end of a relationship.

Maybe people should unfriend you for liking Hillary Clinton. Just saying. But they'd probably unfriend you for just being self-righteous. That could be sufficient grounds.

More personal attacks LivingMetal? Still waiting for you to explain your support for candidate Trump...

If all you can do is deflect, pivot, and issue ad hominem attacks, maybe you should steer clear of these types of debates.

I appreciate what you guy are saying -- immersing oneself in an echo chamber is unproductive and ultimately hazardous -- but I believe in some cases of extreme, unbridgeable gaps in political ideology it's impossible to maintain a friendly relationship. I just think there's a difference between disagreeing about what programs get funded and how to respond to acts of aggression, and disagreements about what it means to be a decent human being.

I wouldn't hate anyone for being a Trump supporter. Sure, I disagree with who they want, but I wouldn't unfriend or hate someone over it

Ditto. Surrounded by Crooked Hillary fans but friends are friends and they don't mind me siding with him...

This election sure is serious business!

I think you SHOULD hate anyone who supports trump. You should not support rampant misogyny. You should not support someone who hates so much. you should not support someone who lies so much and so blatantly. You should not support someone who has absolutely no grasp of politics, common sense, courtesy, decency, or the american people.

Donald trump has no respect for America, he has no respect for women, he has no respect for blacks or hispanics or gays or anyone other than white males in the 1%, and if you can't see how obviously he disrespects everything that makes America 'great', then you are a fool. This is not real to him, this is a game; a publicity stunt. This is not a race to the white house, it's reality TV, and if you can't see this, then you are, for lack of a nicer way of saying it, stupid.

If you support Trump in all his comically exaggerated, hyper-ignoramus bombast, then you are an idiot.

Put simply, if you DO support trump, then you are a bad person. If you support trump, you deserve zero respect. If you support trump, you do not deserve my attention or my friendship.

The only reason I say this now instead of giving the proper response of rolling my eyes and walking away is that, if enough idiots are out there who get this moron elected, then I'll have to stay up here in the great white north, as your country goes into shambles. If you let that happen, you are a terrible person, and you are scum.

Hillary or no, I don't care. Donald Trump is figuratively nothing more than an amalgamation of everything wrong with America bunched up and given human form. He's a bad businessman, he's a terrible liar, he's inconsolably stupid, he's hilariously inept, he's comically oblivious, and above all else he is a very clear sociopath. The way he lies so frequently, blatantly, and unrepetantly and doesn't even CARE when he is caught is one of the most obvious tells of a sociopath.

I would rather vote for Vladimir Putin. At least Putin knows shit about politics. He might be a tyrant of epic proportions, but at least he knows his shit. You can't even pretend Trump knows a thing about politics. He doesn't even know economics, since he's bankrupted how many times in the past two decades? He's bad in virtually every way, and short of actual genocide, I can't imagine any way to make this pond scum in the shape of a human any worse.

In summation, it's totally logical to straight up hate anyone who supports trump. Supporting trump is almost a litmus test to check a person's true nature. "Support trump? Must be both stupid and shitty; no other possible explanation unless you're trolling."

Fuck trump. Fuck him in his orange-tinted starfish. if he gets elected, I truly hope someone plants a bullet between his eyes, just like how he insisted his followers should do to Hillary, the bastard.

I realize these things go above just simple "difference of opinion" but this post felt very extreme at the time and came off as hypocritical because of how violent it was. It was posts like which made me write why I had said something such as being tempted to vote for Hillary or Trump just to go against the whole "you can only vote for this person because of this reason", because I was very much against how often people were generalizing each other with this statement just to blanketly dismiss everything, as I had mentioned previously in this thread voting for someone didn't necessarily mean agreeing with everything they said or did so there could have been plenty of reasons. I never voted though and realized a lot of my logic in this thread was wrong.

Edit: I've edited this comment to rewrite it as to more accurately portray what I meant to say at the time, as the original was poorly worded.

There are very good reasons to vote for Trump.

But go ahead, continue sneering at his supporters. Let's see where that will lead to.

I wouldn't diss on my family because of political differences (and I usually keep politics to a minimum with them), but any of my facebook friends who show right or far right tendencies I defriend without making a fuss.

Consequently, most of my facebook friends are left/far left.
