If anything, the 2016 election has outed quite a few people as to how they really feel about a great number of the issues that are polarizing the US.
So, maybe you learn something about some friends due to their political affiliations, or more specifically, stumping on public forums for said affiliations, but does that change any of the common ground you share that made you friends in the first place? Probably not.
As for trying to show someone the "light" or teach them the "right way of thinking" because you're trying to help them, I would really just let that kind of mentality go.
If you're not capable of doing that, then yes; you should probably stick exclusively to like minded cliques in echo chambers, free of any sort of meaningful discussion.
