Forums - Nintendo - Nintendo says the NX is a 'Home gaming system'

It's weird that they're calling it a home gaming system, though. Messaging-wise, I mean. They didn't have to do that, but they did. It's weird. If it's main gimmick is being portable, and being a brand new concept, specifying that it's for the home is counter-intuitive.

Guess we'll see in a few hours. It's also entirely possible they want the 3DS to keep going for a couple more years. For one they probably still make OK money off the 3DS so why not keep a few extra bucks flowing in, and 3DS is also super cheap so it services the lower end of the market well for Nintendo.

The NX is likely too large, too power hungry (meaning low battery life) and possibly too expensive to be a plausible 3DS replacement at this time. Maybe when they can die shrink it to like 10nm or 7nm in several years a smaller "really portable" form factor will be possible.

Hence they need to make hay with the NX being a "home first" device for a little while at least even if the portable nature of the console is central to its design.

I'm sure they will make a big fuss about being able to move it around the house easily and possibly stream to different devices very easily for example, for whatever reason, even going back to giving the GameCube a handle, Nintendo seems obsessed with the idea of a console that's easy to move around the house.

My new theory has been that the NX is more akin to a laptop, and that's how it'll be marketed, but this doesn't lend itself to that at all.

Laptop as in if PC's are Consoles and tablet's and phones are handhelds, I think that the NX is going to be that other slot that we don't have. Portable, but for "serious" gaming. The drop in power is more palpable because you're buying convenience. But again, it wouldn't be marketed as a "home system," so I don't know.

I guess it could be neat if it can stream to nearby tablets for example. Say one kid has an iPad, if you have an NX, you can stream Mario to your buddy's iPad and even snap off a controller so he can play and you can even have seperate displays.

Maybe it's a new 3DS with a heavy chain connected to your home. People jump to conclusions way too fast.

If you demand respect or gratitude for your volunteer work, you're doing volunteering wrong.

Is a home console with an AMD brain.

Nintendo could be aiming for 10nm process from the beginning, Samsung has already annonced their process is in full production,
it should be ready for end product launches by Spring 2017 when NX is supposed to go on sale.
That's an aggressive schedule, but given they aren't making the Christmas 2016 season, that would be the advisable route IMHO.
I guess that isn't really Nintendo's style, but would be the best means to optimally position re: other consoles and Android phablets.
MS' Scorpio would be positioned to leverage a 10nm process, except that AMD is looking to skip 10nm to jump on 7nm quicker.
If Nintendo is going with an ARM/NVIDIA platform though, I don't see why 10nm isn't reasonable, given it will be on phone/tablet APUs.
