No, I think Nintendo is going for local multiplayer. They can't resist the whole "gather around the Nintendo system and play together" thing, nothing gives Nintendo a raging boner faster than that line of thinking, lol.

So the detachable controllers have to be designed for that contingency.

Like I said too it's possible NX could also stream to nearby tablets/phones too. So say "Kid A" is carrying his NX around and "Kid B" has an iPad, and they want to play Smash Brothers NX, it's possible the NX could "stream" a second video signal that can also be displayed on the iPad.

But Kid B with the iPad still needs a game controller .... so the NX has break apart controllers to use in a pinch. There you go. It could basically be like a very convienant little LAN machine. This is also potentially genius for spreading word of mouth on the device, because Kid A is basically a walking advert for the NX, so Kid B who had fun playing Smash Brothers now goes running home asking mom/dad for his own NX.

Hopefully though Nintendo will make a home Pro Controller with a "full" d-pad ... don't want that for long home play sessions.

Local multiplayer did sell the Wii. You cannot blame Nintendo for trying this way again. It's their strong field and a bit ignored by the other console makers.

Would this also means Nintendo is losing the shoulder buttons though? Could they still exist if your base controller would be attached at the top end?

I think they would have to lose them.

If they really wanted them for "break apart" mode I imagine they could have shoulder buttons still. Would require a little more thought by their design department (maybe they just press in when attached to the base screen).

The share button on the DS4 is amazing! Though it works so good because the PS4 records the last 15 minutes of gameplay. Would love that feature on the NX.

Saved lots of nice PVP moments in Dark Souls 3 thanks to that, like that one time i managed to kill 2 guys in a 4 vs 1 PVP as a mound maker and got the shackle.

That illustration is so lazy. I bet it was made by a youtuber.

Based on the pics and the rumor of the end controllers being separatable from the main console, I don't think that its a disjointed "d-pad". I think its the ab/xy buttons on both sides of the controller. This way it can be a SNES-ish Wiimote for two players or something similar. But of course one of them can also be used as a d-pad when needed.

I am convinced that multiplayer on the go for NX will be achieved through wireless communication between two or more NXes. Regardless of what NX turns out to be, this is how multiplayer on the go will be done, because giving each one of two players half a controller greatly limits the games that can be played in multiplayer.

My thoughts too.

I still think the "detachable" controller rumor stems from Nintendo's patent for interchangeable controller parts, not fully detachable wiimote/snes/nes controllers.

I also don't think your idea of detachable controller is for home use. For the home edition, you'll get a pro-controller-esque device. That is what makes more sense.

There is actually some truth in this rumour. In fact my sources claim that the SELECT button will also be modified, it will be renamed PLEASE SELECT (they are trying to be as polite as possible). Since it would be inconvenient to write the whole name in the controller then it will be simply called PS (just for convenience, nothing to do with anything else). Of course this was just a prototype, so the final product could be completely different. But please believe me I'm a real industry insider!

Nintendo, say something! Even the makers of fake rumours are tired of the wait, just look at the picture! Even they are starting to not give a shit!

I doubt Nintendo reads these forums.

I was blind, but now i see. It is brilliant, it is beautiful. I love it. Nintendo have really outdone themselves this time. /caressing the knobs

Hunting Season is done...

I think a couple of posters at NeoGaf might've cracked this thing ... what if the "controller" wings are using the Sharp Free Form LCD technology?

I mean we just assumed the screen would be in the middle and the controller sides would be plastic, but imagine an NX where the whole face of the screen is an LCD, the wings just have an analog stick + d-pad or buttons on them, but still surrounded by an LCD.

Then when you detach the controllers and use them horizontally (NES/SNES pad style) the LCD underneath the d-pad could show B/A/X/Y buttons, but when it's connected back to the system that could go away, as the LCD can display whatever it wants underneath the (transparent?) buttons.

This could also explain the mystery of what Nintendo is using the free form LCD display for since they did definitely sign a deal with Sharp to use that tech (not just a patent).

If this is actually being seriously discussed I think Nintendo's torturous approach to keeping the Nx in our minds is working.

I'm gonna have to whip something up myself... perhaps it comes with a built-in selfie stick?
