Forums - Nintendo - A biased review: Star Fox Zero

Its shocking how Miyamoto used the GamePad so well with Pikmin 3 but not for StarFox Zero. Wii motion control with GamePad as second screen for rear-view mirror, level layout, or controlling other pilots routes would have been incredible. If you could have control of other pilots route, the game could of had incredibly large all range mode missions.

It honestly boggles my mind that people try to defend the control scheme of SF0. I largely agree.

I can't understand people who still have trouble with the controls. They really aren't as hard as some make them look like. You don't even have the need to look at both screens, just look at the gamepad and you're good.

This control scheme allows for much more precise aiming, for much higher scores and for a wider target range. Playing SF643D after SF0 showed me that the classic controls are completely inferior.

They aren't  hard.  They're  bad. It is a poorly designed control  scheme.

I bet that on launch the Nintendo Switch will have no built in in-game voice chat. He bets that it will. The winner gets six months of avatar control over the other user.

Because who wants to play a console game on their nice big TV screen right?

When instead you can just play through "Star fox Zero" completly on your little gamepad one?

Its a bad design choice, and it borderline ruined the game.

Crazy how many people defend it.

Interesting.

Having played the, admittedly limited, demo a few times I have real doubts that i'll have any real issues with the controls. It wouldn't be the first time I've liked unconventional controls that received a lot of hate.

The arwing seemed to control great. I felt no need to be looking at two screens at once (either tv or gamepad is fine), which is what many people complain about. I never had any issue focusing on the reticle and ship in any games so I doubt that's an issue for me. Probably a personal issue based on how your mind processes the information. I can't say I've really practised barrel rolls, so that something I should check out.

Still, despite my positivity, there's so much negativity expressed about this game that i've not bought it so far. It spiked my curiosity and presumably it must have yours too as you did get the game. In videos it does look like a great starfox game so it's a shame if it is bad.

Not everyones expririance is the same as yours. It's arrogant when people think you must hate something as subjective as a control scheme just because they do. I remember the hate some people had for kid icaus uprising's controls and i didn't have any issues at all. Then some people loved skywards swards controls and I was in the camp of people who didn't like them. But if you did like the controls good for you. You could argue that it's bad design for appealing only to a niche group but dont blame the gamers who enjoyed them.

Everyone is talking about looking down and up at the screen when you know you can just hold the minus button and the cockpit and third person view switch screens... I was fine with the controls and I do agree, having to look at the GamePad and then TV kinda sucks, which is why I just switched the view when I needed a different view. Solves the whole two screen issue. For me at least. Anyone who argues against that probably wouldn't have even tried it. Either way, I enjoyed the game. Me saying I enjoyed it is not equal to me defending it. Just putting my opinion out there like everyone else does with everything.

The controls are my biggest issue with this damn game. I've spent a hour with it and then gave up on it I might go back to it, but who knows..

So essentially, just get Star Fox 64 on Virtual Console instead?

New review, I haven't got around to playing SF0 yet but I'm still willing to give it a try.

Signature goes here!

I like the control scheme until I get to a boss, then it all goes to shit.
