Forums - Nintendo - Nintendo have not made an operating profit overall this generation.

Nintendo made more profit in FY 2010/2011 than they have lost this generation. While the WiiU was a downer for 3 FYs, its definitely no reason to think they need to drop the HW business. They have enough cash to have a few meh consoles.

But fact is that they loss only around $9m till now, and with this year (most likely only with this Q1) they will become profitable this gen.

It's irrelevant if they have generated losses in the past, if they are generating profits now. All the losses have already been balanced with their own capital (of which they have A LOT) and now they are adding to that capital again.

Also, you're calling mt charts selective while bringing up Uncharted 4 vs Yokai in Germany.

I rest my case.

Actually I'm pretty sure the PS3 lost quite a substantial amount of money overall, I don't think the profits it started turning later on actually made up there early losses. Don't have figures so I could be wrong.

Interesting to know... I mean, PS3 PSN Plus users probably have barely declined since PS4 launch, so that will be strong factor helping them.
I wonder if Nintendo thinks there user base would be more averse to paid online, or what their rationale is for avoiding that.
Could be that as a console without "broad" software library, and which may often be "second console", they don't see that as net positive for them.

Welcome to 2016

Look man, if people want to re-live the golden days of their favorite Nintendo games/consoles from years past, just let them...

Wii U has and will continue to cost them financially, GET OVER IT!

FFS Nintendo fans why are you being so defensive over this. The fact is they will have lost money on the Wii U by the end of the gen. Any profit made by the 3DS is sucked up by the sinking Wii U.

Literally nothing bad is said to Nintendo fans and you still act like everybody picks on you. Even the dumb pro-Nintendo comments are protected by Nintendo fans and nobody is allowed to question it.

Barkley makes a point, at least entertain the thought that Nintendo might drop home consoles in favour on going more software based and without the high risk of having to make hardware. Most people aren't talking about Ninty dropping hardware straight away but over the long term, like NX could be their last home console and Nintendo makes the transition over, let's say, 10 years. Also people that predict this AREN'T against Nintendo. I don't even think many people on here hate Nintendo.

It depends where Nintendo see their future and it could be mobile, software and handheld. That their strongest position right now. NX could be the tester to see if home console hardware is still a profitable avenue for them, it could be a success and they continue to make home consoles.

There is an healthy discussion to be had here but this defensive attitude doesn't help. Nobody is against Nintendo.

So which is it? Did they lose a ton of money like the OP says or did they lose 9M ?

This is key. They have turned the ship, profitable for two straight years. A new console with tons of hype coming in, branching out in Theme Parks, Mobile and possibly series. I think the future looks bright. No matter what the doomsayers say. Nintendo wont leave their core business until they are absolutely forced to do so.

There is difference between operating profit and Net profit, bottom of line is of course net profit. Nintendo had loss if look only operating profit, but overall, they lost only around $9m this gen and with this current fiscal year they actually have solid proof for this gen.
