Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Pokemon Go has taken over my city, I've never seen anything like this.

Which is why I could totally see Nintendo/Niantic/Pokemon Co selling Pokestop status to various businesses.  GameStop and Best Buy in particular come to mind since they tie into gaming and technology sales and would be pleased as punch to have tons of people drawn to their locations via a game.  Also, gym status could be sold to individual locations...my word, the business posibilities.  I could see malls being all over this, wanting multiple stops and 2 or 3 gyms in the building, especially really large ones.

I think most malls already have Pokestops. The nearest one to me has at least half a dozen leftover from the Ingress portals. I'm sure there will be an adjustment period as certain locations (especially churches) ask to be removed from the network while many businesses happily volunteer to take their place.

Yeah, one church in particular has been trying for some time to NOT have traffic passing through it's parking lot as it can serve as a shortcut to get to another road.  This will not help with that as it is a Pokestop :P

But yes, most malls have them I imagine.  But at least in my area, we have a very large mall with only 1 stop and 1 gym.  I'm sure I'm not the only one.  Granted, there are 5 or 6 gyms within minutes of driving distance and numerous pokestops so it's not like the general area is lacking.

I've seen someone at my job playing it a bit and that's it. It's not that huge where I live ... yet ( I'm in Canada )

Where in Canada? I find this a little hard to believe. You're lucky if you can hold a gym for more than 30 minutes here. I've lost one that was out 20-25 minutes out of the city on a back road in 30 minutes. I can see 4 gyms and exactly 33 Pokéstops from my home. Granted I live in city center which has around a dozen gyms and at least 150 Pokéstops, that's under-balling it as well. Probably closer to 250-300. So I almost want to call bullshit, but for all I know. You could live in a small town. I'm assuming you live in a very, very small town.

I'm not sure about the all the other malls in Edmonton as I haven't had the time to check out the Southside or most of the north. I can tell you that West Edmonton Mall has 3 gyms inside of it. I've heard people say there is 4 but I haven't gone in since the game came out. I just drove past it. I can also confirm that there is around 50 Pokéstops in the mall. Maybe more? I'll need to actually go inside sometime soonish :P

Do keep in mind that West Edmonton Mall is one of the largest malls in the world and has both a big waterpark and an amusement park within the mall.  For those who want to compare it with Mall of America. Please note that West Edmonton Mall has far more attractions and more stuff for adults. Here's a picture of our water park :3

You can't see everything as there is more behind those slides and behind the camera. If you're asking if that is a loop. Yes it is, not 90 degrees, but it's a loop alright. A floor trap drops you from the top and you nearly free fall for half a second onto the slide and the whole thing is over in about 2.5-3 seconds.

Mall stats below.

West Edmonton Mall:
Size: 5.3 million square feet
Store count: 800+
Founded: 1981

Mall of America:
Size: 4.2 million square feet
Store Count: 520+
Founded: 1992

West Edmonton Mall is about to expand the Casino in a 45 million dollar renovation. So yeah..... it's got A LOT of Pokémon Go hot spots. Edmonton has a lot throughout the city.

Well I'm from Edmonton Canada. You can't even 2 blocks without seeing people playing. Even out in the smaller rural areas people are just driving and playing. I was out from midnight to almost 2am and people are still everywhere. Lures are still placed. People are driving around with their phones out. Biking and skateboarding. Some gyms last mere minutes. It's literally an invasion. Honestly, almost everyone has it here. I've already seen a few level 24's.... and that was yesterday.....

Wow! I can't imagine what it will be once it's officially released!

There is no doubt in my mind that it'll be a hit. Especially in Canada. People are crazy here and well... this is Edmonton. It's no surprised that everyone has APK's and out and about. Last night I saw someone put on their hazard lights and sat in the middle lane of a normally very busy road. When I mean busy, I mean by an University and downtown in a major city. He just sat there for a about 2 minutes in the center lane as everyone had to go around him. There were two Pokéstops where the circle actually overlaps each other. A lure on each. I saw about 4 other cars parked outside of the film rating board (the building with the Pokéstops). I've seen people speed and whip and corners. Stop and go. A lot of vehicles with 5 people in it, I think some had more people than seatbelts. Edmontonians are crazy!

Yesterday I captured the Arena in Stony which is a small town outside of the city. A truck of 5 people drove off and when I was capturing the gym they whipped around the corner and was back with in a minute. Luckily they were an ally team :3

Then again here's some local driving style. Just another rich dude who needs to prove a point on how his dick is bigger than everyone else's and that he doesn't give a fuck.
Disclaimer: I was NOT involved in this in any shape or form.

Yep. I live in a small town. But I'm at 10 minutes from the 3rd biggest city in my province(Quebec), Lévis. I'm sure a lot of people are playing there but I honestly don't know since I'm waiting for the official app to come out :P

You are going to find yourself very far behind. Dealing with the gyms will be out of your reach well.... forever. Even I can't really do them and I've been playing hardcore. We have a lot of people in our city that play nearly 24/7 and need to get a fucking life. They literally spend all day driving around and makes the gym experience very challenging for those who actually have school or a job. The XP curve gets absolutely ridiculous. There is a reason no one is max level or even level 60 from my knowledge. You can level up to max level in any known MMO faster than you can in this game. You're going to regret that you waited. I've seen campers on multiple occasion. The provincial government building has around 20-30 Pokéstops that's all within a 5 minute radius of walking distance. You can hit them all up so fast that they reset by the time you get a few. Many of them are just touching each other and the two gyms are 30 seconds apart. You'll find about 5-6 lures up at any given time.

To be honest.... I'm not sure if they will actually perma ban people or reset the game with all the money people are paying. I spent around $40 so I could have a full bag upgrade. The default is 350, the max is 1000.  The amount of Pokéstops here is so ridiculous that it's actually worth it. I'd ligetimally lose it and feel robbed if I was banned. I think temp bans until it's officially released is perfectly acceptable however. I wouldn't be upset about that. If they could get everyone in Canada, I wouldn't be against it either. It's absolutely not fair to people like you who are waiting patiently, and will be absolutely fucked for being the good person who is obeying the companies wishes. Maybe Niantic can reward those people and give them a bunch of Pokécoins? I cannot stress enough on how unfair this advantage is. You will be mercilessly insta-gibbed if you try to take any gyms.

Speaking of Quebec. Some guy hit a police car while driving in Quebec City. Both cops suffered some minor injuries. It wasn't stated if he was charged or let go as he was fully honest about everything he did and it served as an example of how dangerous the game is while driving. It was just in a parking lot and it's only a matter of time until the cops start cracking down on people playing and driving. Unlike texting.... you need to look at the phone constantly, you can't blind fire it.

Sounds like you know how the game works, I'm still puzzled by it. I see people walking / standing / sitting around in groups with their phone out, no clue what they're doing. And it's starting to appear or signs, eg the home hardware in Ayr was advertising with "Pokemon Go stop here" on their huge sign. Do Pokemon spawn in a certain location for everyone? Can everyone get the same Pokemon? Do they disappear, move around, respawn? Can you catch the same one multiple times, why camp a spot? And what's a gym. First I thought people meant there was a pokemon at an actual gym lol. I don't know much about pokemon.

I guess it's more suited to city centers. I went on an 80km bike ride today through the country side and little villages on the way, nothing there. My town of 11k is just big enough to have a few small groups of people looking around down town. (2 blocks is all the down town there is in Paris, on)

Someone hosted some big event and set up a beer tent of some sorts, people from other cities came and there were cables everywhere from people charging their phone. Also lots of annoying kids running around because their parents wanted to play PoGo (it was 12am). Game shows no signs of slowing yet!

Sure I can answer some of your questions. There are still a few things I am learning myself.

A few things first. While a lot of people are advertising for their Pokéstops. You can get them from the outside in most cases. If they consistently put a lure on the stop. Then a lot of people will stay and camp there. on to the questions. As for biking around. Your eggs will not record any distance if you are going over 20kmph. They don't want people to drive and go. Unfortunately that is not happening as millions are diving as they play to get to the Pokéstops faster. It's inevitable and the police are going to make a lot of money from distracted driving tickets.

Q: Do Pokémon spawn in a certain location for everyone?
A: Yes they do. At least when they appear. I'm not sure how long they last after someone catches or how that system works. Some Pokémon will show up at certain locations all the time. For example in Edmonton there's a trail by my place that has lots of Pikachu's. Which are a little hard to find else where. So some areas will have Pokémon where other areas do not. Much like in the games and this makes people go else where to find them.

Q:  Can everyone get the same Pokémon?
A: If it spawns in the same location. Everyone who tries to catch it can get it. So it's available for everyone who is in the location it shows up on. Which is why you see stuff like this happening.

Q:  Can you catch the same one multiple times, why camp a spot?
A: If you mean if you can catch the same Pokémon at the same spot multiple times. Of course, though this mainly the case for the super common Pokémon's. Like Pidgy's and what not.
Q: Do they disappear, move around, respawn?
A: Yes they do. It's super annoying if it's a rare Pokémon because they rarely even spawn. It's bullshit actually and it makes you feel like you wasted your time and it's very unfortunate to happen to you. Pokémon can also run away while you try to catch it. When it does.... it's gone. Gone is gone.
Q: What's a gym.
A: Great question. A gym are fixed locations on the map with the three factions (Mystic, Valor, and Instinct) try to control and keep these points of interest for themselves. They can only be occupied by one team at a time. Once you win a gym you may place one Pokémon there per a trainer. That Pokémon will hold that location until another member or team of another faction fights it and wins. They then take control over the gym. Basically it's a game of territorial domination.
I hope that helps you and I really hope that you enjoy the game. Tons of small towns have lots of Pokéstops and gyms. Some more than others. an 11km town should have at least 6-7 gyms and a fair few Pokéstops are hot locations.

Something that blows up as huge and fast as this is bound to deflate at an equally impressive rate, that's just how trends work, the entertainment nomads will soon find new pastures and move to the next "it" thing. Major kudos for creating a global phenomenon though, it's good to see some real revenue streams flowing Nintendo's way again!

Thanks! I don't have a cell phone so can't play it myself. Yet still curious about what's going on around me. I guess the park opposite my house is a pokestop as again there were a bunch of kids hanging out with their phones held up in front of them pointing in the same direction.
The town has 11,000 people, it's not 11km long hehe. Big enough to notice people playing the game, and it's still not officially out.

If you ever get a phone you definitely need to play. Hell, it may even warrant the purchase of a phone in its own right. Depending if you'd even be able to catch up at this rate.

I'm surprised you've mentioned that you've seen kids playing. I've only ever seen one kid play. Most of the players are in their 20's to mid 30's. I'm not even kidding.
