Sure I can answer some of your questions. There are still a few things I am learning myself.

A few things first. While a lot of people are advertising for their Pokéstops. You can get them from the outside in most cases. If they consistently put a lure on the stop. Then a lot of people will stay and camp there. on to the questions. As for biking around. Your eggs will not record any distance if you are going over 20kmph. They don't want people to drive and go. Unfortunately that is not happening as millions are diving as they play to get to the Pokéstops faster. It's inevitable and the police are going to make a lot of money from distracted driving tickets.

Q: Do Pokémon spawn in a certain location for everyone?
A: Yes they do. At least when they appear. I'm not sure how long they last after someone catches or how that system works. Some Pokémon will show up at certain locations all the time. For example in Edmonton there's a trail by my place that has lots of Pikachu's. Which are a little hard to find else where. So some areas will have Pokémon where other areas do not. Much like in the games and this makes people go else where to find them.

Q:  Can everyone get the same Pokémon?
A: If it spawns in the same location. Everyone who tries to catch it can get it. So it's available for everyone who is in the location it shows up on. Which is why you see stuff like this happening.

Q:  Can you catch the same one multiple times, why camp a spot?
A: If you mean if you can catch the same Pokémon at the same spot multiple times. Of course, though this mainly the case for the super common Pokémon's. Like Pidgy's and what not.
Q: Do they disappear, move around, respawn?
A: Yes they do. It's super annoying if it's a rare Pokémon because they rarely even spawn. It's bullshit actually and it makes you feel like you wasted your time and it's very unfortunate to happen to you. Pokémon can also run away while you try to catch it. When it does.... it's gone. Gone is gone.
Q: What's a gym.
A: Great question. A gym are fixed locations on the map with the three factions (Mystic, Valor, and Instinct) try to control and keep these points of interest for themselves. They can only be occupied by one team at a time. Once you win a gym you may place one Pokémon there per a trainer. That Pokémon will hold that location until another member or team of another faction fights it and wins. They then take control over the gym. Basically it's a game of territorial domination.
I hope that helps you and I really hope that you enjoy the game. Tons of small towns have lots of Pokéstops and gyms. Some more than others. an 11km town should have at least 6-7 gyms and a fair few Pokéstops are hot locations.

Thanks! I don't have a cell phone so can't play it myself. Yet still curious about what's going on around me. I guess the park opposite my house is a pokestop as again there were a bunch of kids hanging out with their phones held up in front of them pointing in the same direction.
The town has 11,000 people, it's not 11km long hehe. Big enough to notice people playing the game, and it's still not officially out.
