Forums - Gaming Discussion - Examples of good AI-controlled companions?

Video game companions can be a pain in the ass. They shoot enemies we are targeting, they can turn a game way too easy, they get on the way when we are trying to pass through a narrow corridor or when we try to enter a room, and/or they can even do nothing helpful at all.

So I ask you, is there a moment when you were given an AI companion where you felt like: "they created this guy and did a great job, I am glad he/she is accompanying me"?

What game and companion was that?

Off the top of my head, the best AI-controlled companions I had was from Dragon's Dogma. Yes, some people's pawns behaved in a idiotic manner but generally any pawn from a player that had a high level character behaved good for their class. It really came down to how well you taught your pawn to act in it's class and how many skills you unlocked for it.

Ugh, I don't think I have ever experienced good AI companions. Then again, I avoid them like the plague, because I can't stand them at all. I played through Fallout 4 twice and never had a single companion, because fuck them, I'm better off alone. =P

When I do get forced to play along with some stupid NPC character, I'm just happy when they are invincible so I don't have to care too much about them.

Ashley from Resident Evil 4--she couldn't fight, but she always did her best to stick right behind you, and if you needed to shoot something behind her, she'd duck. More than I can say for most friendly AI characters.

Also Ashley from Last of Us saved my ass many times, either with a well-tossed brick or pointing out an enemy I hadn't even seen.

Donald and Goofy in the Kingdom Hearts series...which came out in 2002. Honestly don't think sidekick AI has improved much since, in some games it's worse.
