Louie said: This could be the next Wiimote indeed. I agree with your analysis. If this is one is well thought-out it could be a game changer. |
The Wiimote wasn't a huge success simply because it was simple. It had the whole novelty of motion gaming, get up and move that dramatically altered the gameplay experience.
This controller ... doesn't change anything. It's just another version of the Wii U's existing failed controller but without buttons. There's nothing big about it that's new ... a touchscreen ... yeah ... like every other device, that's not going excite people.
I don't see any new type of gameplay experience coming from this controller that the current Wii U tablet couldn't do.

I get what you are saying! It's not on the same level as a Wii remote in all likelyhood. But it does point into the right direction if Nintendo's focus was indeed on making the controller simple to pickup. The Wii remote was meant to feel familiar because everyone knew how a TV remote worked. This could feel more familiar to the people who play games on smartphones because it has less buttons.
Basically, in terms of simplicity it could go like this: Wii Remote > NX controller > Classic Controller > Wii U Gamepad
Of course, that's all speculation at this point. The question (if this is real) is whether Nintendo actually aimed for ease of use with it and if their whole console revolves around the concept of inviting mass market gamers. We all know the Wiimote didn't exist in a vacuum: The whole console was designed to be cheap, easy to understand and appeal to a broad audience both in software and hardware design.
If the whole thought process behind this thing was "let's make another controller with a screen" I agree it's going to bomb.
